Antlers for dogs... I went to a holistic pet store today and was given a small antler for Prince. It's actually from a real deer, with the velvet-like covering scraped off. It looks like ceramic. It doesn't look as though it should be chewed. Well, I showed it to Prince, he sniffed it and walked away. (I probably would not have let him have it anyway!) Have you ever heard of or tried antlers with your furbabies? (Thank goodness the small one I was given was free!!:)) http://www.petexpertise.com/index.ph...=29870#petdesc |
I bought 5 of them a couple of months ago and gave one to each of my pups. Within a couple of weeks they had completely chewed up 3 of them. The other 2 barely look touched even now. I don't know what the difference was in the ones they chewed up. I'm trying to find something that lasts longer than bully sticks. I think I'm going to try Himalayan Chews next time. |
Wow!! Prince has no interest in it at all. He really doesn't sit and chew, unless it food. |

I have them for my two. I ordered the small elk antlers for them. One of them was kind of flat on one end and they took turns on it,one would chew awhile and if they got up the other would pounce on it. It finally got down to about 3" and I tossed it. Now they have started on the one they didn't seem to like at first. The first one lasted them about 2 months. (that's with them chewing a total of 2hrs a day). They love them and there is no odor and they are supposed to be good for them. |

Mine didnt like the antlers either |
I ordered a deer antler for Taffy from www.petfooddirect.com (They are spelled antlerz in case you want to search for them. Guess they thought the deer had a copyright on the real spelling...LOL) She chewed on it for a bit. She still appears to prefer paper and/or cardboard as evidenced daily (if not hourly) by our living room floor. She received some Himalayan chews for her birthday and has chewed on them a little bit each day but I know she holds them in very high esteem. She moves them daily from where she has hidden them going through her little whimpering "where? where? where?" routine EVERY DAY. It is so comical. Evidently she treasures them so much that she is afraid that my husband or I will steal them when she isn't looking. (I promise you that if she sees us watching or if we comment aloud to each other, she will move them!) When we don't comment, she is just as liable to leave them in the middle of the floor after she has nosed "invisible" dirt over them to better hide them. I've seen her hide her mini carrots this way but not with the same determination and pattern she exhibits for these Himalayan chews...LOL Did I remember to mention that there were three or four of these in the package and she goes through the whimper-whimper-hide-cover routine with EACH one every day. I probably shouldn't have given all of them to her at once but honestly she was so cute and comical with the first one that I just kept on giving them to see her "performance" ... defnitely Oscar worthy! |
If your dog is not interested in a full antler, something getting ones that are split in half so they can smell/chew the marrow will help. Otherwise some dogs (such as mine) will just have no interest! |
That's is all I use now. My little ones love it in fact I bought a couple of big ones and had them sawed in half so each one had their own, and they last 4-ever. for a while there I was tossing at leas 1-2 toys away a day because they are such power chewers. :) |

Also, if your lil one doesn't seem to care for the antler you could soak it in chicken broth and then give it to them. Would like to find out more about the himalayan Chews..Anyone else give these?? |
My two go through the 'moo' sticks like crazy so I bought some himalayan chews and they love these AND they last a lot longer than the bully sticks.Sadly I did try the deer antlers and they don't even look at them :( Eileen |
What's a himilayan chew? Where can you get them? Are they as safe as bullys? Are they digestible? |
I have never even heard of the himalayan chews until now! I looked on our bully stick website and found some! Do they really last longer than bully sticks? Because mine go through chews in no time.. I would LOVE to find something safe for them to actually enjoy chewing. http://www.bestbullysticks.com/home/...dog_chews.html |
