New Mommy to 8 week Yorkie Hello all. First let me tell you how excited that I am that I found you. I'm starting my first thread here and I was wondering that as a first time pet owner and first time yorkie mommy. Is their anything that I need to be aware of? Anything that I should be doing?? Any advice or help would be great =] We are crate training....no luck. We are trying to potty train to a puppy bin (litter box) no luck.....shes very stubborn hahahha please help:animal-pa |
Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new furbaby! I must warn you that the pros/elders on here will tell you that 8 weeks is too young for your baby to have been taken from her mother. They mean well and will give you fantastic advice...be prepared :) |
Yorkies are stubborn for sure. Have you tried using pee pads? Yorkies seem to prefer them to litter box's. The only tip that I can give you is to watch for signs of hypoglycemia and know the steps to take if her blood sugar levels drop. You have brought your little girl home just a tad early for what is recommended. She should have been with her Mommy a little longer. If she is a bigger girl than you probably won't have any problems other than lack of socialization skills (biting, mouthing you). I know that I had troubles with Missy's blood sugar up until about 9.5 weeks of age. So that's just something to keep an eye on, and to know how to treat if she has troubles. Also, you should ALWAYS keep food available to her. These little ones eat small amounts, and need to eat regularly, especially when they are puppies. If the crate training isn't working for you, you could try sectioning off a little area for her by using an x-pen. This worked wonders for us. Congratulations on your new furbaby and welcome to YT. :) |
Oh, and PICTURES PLEASE! :D |
Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new family member. Pictures are most welcome. :pMost times problems continue throughout a dogs life when they have been taken from their mom too young. The norm is 12 to 14 weeks unless they are really tiny, then it can be up to 4 to 6 months. The mom teaches them more than a lot of people realize. I'd suggest getting a book on training. Puppies that young have an attention span of about 3 seconds, so training has to continually be consistant and persistant, never quitting till the goal is reached. It takes a few months, not days or weeks. |
Congrats on your new furbaby! |
Hi Zoeybo! Welcom to YT! I'm pretty new to the forums as well and I have a new little girl we brought home a couple days ago. She's doing realy well but I am also having the same issue with the potty training. I'm litter box training her too! And I was so mad the other day she just wasnt getting it and today out of no were she just got up and went in the litterbox. Haha! So All I can say is consitency is key. Also what I did was make like a play pen gate thing. You can get a playpen for cheap anywhere. And I bought some turf from home depo (it cost me about $5) and then I made an enclouser with the litterbox and a bed and an eating area. I play with her after her meals in there and then when I see she has to use the bathroom I coax her in the litterbox tell her "Go Potty!" till she does smthn. then praise her wildly click the clicker and give her a SMALL peice of mottzerella cheese as a treat. Its been working well. But my road block is the litterbox is in the garage so I have to figure out a way for her to let me know when she has to go when she's playing in the one room she's allowed in inside. Anways All I can say is be consistent and try and stick to a scheduale as best you can. If you have any other questions just PM me cuz it seems like you and me are at the exact same stage right now with our pups. -TAStetherainbow |
Congrats...Just watch for signs of low blood sugar. Some people recomend keeping some Kayro syrup handy just in case.I would also never leave your pup unattended outside of it's crate/pen until it's a little older. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk and Congratulations on getting your new baby! Do you have any Nutrical on hand? It's what I used when my Mia went into hypoglycemic shock. How much does your little one weigh? One suggestion I would make is that you make sure that your little one eats and sleeps frequently. You really need to make sure that they don't get to playing too long. They can use up alot of energy while playing and not getting enough food and sleep is what will throw them into a hypoglycemic shock. Very scary! And if your little one is really little - it doesn't take long for you to loose them. |
1 Attachment(s) thank you all so much =] I'm surprised to hear about her being to small to bring home =[ I've been watching her keeping an eye on her making sure shes not showing signs of low blood sugar. Shes eating really good, and drinking good. She does sleep alot. But she plays for like 30-40 min and then sleeps for about 30-40 min. I can not express how happy she makes me. I never thought that I would be this big of a dog lover. Now I am. Loving every min of it. Thank you for all the advice. I will keep you all updated on how everything is going. |
Oh, about potty training - don't get discouraged - my 2 took forever to train!! Literally, they were close to (or were) a year old - so if you get them trained before that... consider yourself lucky! :D Yorkies can be very hard to potty train. |
AWww, she is ADORABLE! The little boy that is holding her (I'm guessing your son?) looks absolutely thrilled. He is just beaming :D Great pic! |

thank you everyone for all the advice =] you are all wonderful  |
Oh my gosh, she is so stinkin' cute in her little Xmas dress. Her name is Zoey? Love the name. I was considering that name for my new baby that arrives in Dec, but we decided on Dora instead. |
I am giving her kibble. The same kind of the breeder was using. She told me to mix yogurt and cottage cheese like alternate it with her food. She also told me that I could put sugar in her water? On top of all that I have stuff to put on her food that I bought from Petland. Its like a syrup based really thick liquid that goes on her food. Of course I dont do all these. I have just been putting the stuff on her food that came from the pet store. |
Yes her name is Zoey Bo......Bo comes from "Glenn Edward "Bo" Schembechler Jr. " the best all time Michigan football coach. We are wolverine fans hahah. I love Dora thats really cute  |

Zoey and your boys are absolutely adorable!!! A little bit of plain yogurt or cottage cheese is good. Yorkies can get really bad teeth and I tend to think that the sugar in the water and the syrup on the food is a little too much for her. The nutrical, which is in a tube and is gel-like, given to her in the morning and at night should be plenty. You just squeeze a little out on your finger and rub it in her mouth - that way you know she got it. Also, you can start brushing her teeth with a dog toothpaste right away. Yorkies teeth can get bad and cause other health issues. Oh, and please don't frequent Petland. It is the biggest supplier of puppymill dogs. By buying anything there you contribute to their monitary gain and continued business of puppymills. My Mia came from there. :cry8: |
