I need some feedback please... Ok so I'm switching Coco from advantage flea meds to frontline plus. She's so small and her vet said I would have to use 1/4 of the meds in 1 bottle. So he gave me the frontline for cats and kittens. He said to give her half of the meds from that, it's easier to measure and the ingrediennts aren't different for cats and dogs, just the dosage. I trust her vet but I was curious if anyone else uses flea meds on their dogs that are made for cats because of their size. |
I made the switch from advantage flea meds to frontline plus. He didn't say anything about using a cat one. hmmmmmmmmm |

If could be up to each individual vet as to which frontline product they recommend. Mine has never said anything about not given Mollie anything other than the full dose. I've never thought to ask. |
don't know! Personally, if I have a question that a vet says, I start looking in the yellow pages. can't hurt to get more than one opinion. |
Jewels is just 4 lbs and I give her the regular amount of the advantage. |
I don't think that's a good idea Noebella. I believe it was on here that I read someone's cat got really sick because they gave it their dog's flea medication. Can't it have the same effect if it's the other way around? |
I asked and he assured me that because she so small too much might have a negative affect and the one for cats only has a dosage difference, not ingredients. I will get a second opinion before using it but was wondering about it. |
Sophie's vet recommended .20 cc when she was around 3 pounds. (But I found it didn't do much for her, so I called them and they said I could increase the dosage to anything at or below .67) I think it helps, but we also have a big, outside dog, and Sophie always get fleas on her when she goes outside to play with him. arghhhh. By the way, the package of Frontline my vet gave me shows dosage by the dog's weight, and at the bottom it indicates 0.50 for cats....so I guess it is the same medication, just different dosage. |
I have given both mine Frontline Plus for over a year, one is 3-4 lbs and one is 6-7 lbs and have had no problems at all, nor has my vet suggested any adjustments to dosage. |
Just wondering why you switched from advantage to frontline? I just bought advantage for both my dogs, I have never used it before, but I put it on them. Is there something wrong with it that you switched?? |
My vet's recommendation HI from Oklahoma, My vet has prescribed Frontline Plus also. He recommends that I split the dose between my 5 lb Yorkies. The med is for up to 22 pounds so it makes sense that 5 lb little ones would still benefit from 1/2 of the dose. This is just my own experience...but it has worked fine without any problems. cat meds Zoe is 4#,s and my vet also said to use the cat flea med. I trust him completely!! |

According to my vet, you should never give dog flea medication to a cat - it is extremely toxic - but the other way around (cat flea med to a dog) is not toxic. Tatum uses Advantage - she is 5 lbs. and we apply the entire dosage under the direction of the vet. Hope that helps. |
advantage for fleas is the same formula whether for a dog or cat. only difference is in the packaging (marketing). adavantix is different and cannot be used on cats. just dogs...so, using advantage on a dog that is in the "cat bottle" is ok. i buy the large breed packages of advantage and divide it up for all of mine. |

Have you ever seen a cat foam at the mouth if they get some of the cat flea med in their mouth?? Freaked me out the first time. Our vet had warned us that you need to apply the liquid a little higher on the neck than you would a dog because they can twist around so much further and lick between their shoulder blades where as dogs can't. Well, the first time I didn't get it high enough and one of the cats licked it. Luckily the vet had warned me and said if that happened, the cat would be okay.... it just looks scary! |
