Whats the diiference.... between a silky and a yorkie? Im sure its probably a silly ?? but I have people asking me all the time if Roxy is a silky or yorkie. Can someone tell me what the differences are so I personally know. Thanks. |
wow there must be alot of us that dont know, there is 18 views to this post but no response. Im hoping someone can tell me. |
The differences I know of is that silkys are bigger and their snout is longer. |
Someone posted a link about this very subject not too long ago and it was really informative. Maybe you can do a search and pull it up...I think it was only a couple weeks ago and it had pictures and detailed differences :) |
Thanks to the both of you!! I will pull a search. |
2 Attachment(s) Here are some pictures of an adult Yorkie and pictures of an adult silky. Go here and it will tell you about each breed. http://www.akc.org/breeds/breeds_a.cfm |
sorry it took awhile for you to get a response :( but for me i think the same that silkies are bigger and their noses seem longer and a bit wider. |
The Silky breed was derived by crossing the Australian Terrier with the Yorkshire Terrier (and the Australian Terrier already had the Yorkie in them!). But upon closer inspection, the Silky has a broader body type...built a little more solidly. They have a bigger head, longer nose and their coat is not supposed to grow more than 4" (whereas the Yorkies' coat flows right down to the floor and beyond). They too, do not shed. They are fiercely protective of their owners; moreso than the usual Yorkie. They absolutely love kids and other puppies and therefore make great additions to any family. Their fur is extremely silky to the touch (hence the name) and does need regular grooming. There are no specific health problems common to this breed. |
These explanations seem good to me. I just want to add that I have two friends with silkies and both are stockier than my yorkies, almost like a Scotty terrier, only not black. |
I had a purebred Silky, we lost her 4 yrs ago at 14 1/2 yrs old. Her coat would grow right to the floor and was a perfect steel blue with tan head and markings exactly the same as a yorkie. However she weighed about 9 1/2 lbs. which is right for the standard. We got her instead of a yorkie at the time because we had small children at home and silkies are definitely sturdier than yorkies. She was an absolutely lovely dog, we still miss her very much. If you have a bit bigger than normal yorkie and a bit smaller than normal silky most people would not be able to tell them apart. |
Thanks everyone, they both look so very similar that its hard to tell them apart. I have never seen them in person, but thought Id ask. Thanks for all your help! |
