need some advice! We just got Miley 9 days ago. (by the way, she is the cutest thing EVER!!!) I am new to dogs in general so I really have no idea what I am doing! I know some of you think that I shouldn't even own a yorkie with no experience in dogs but I really am trying to do things right and I am reading and researching so that I can make the right decisions in her care. I can't even believe how crazy I am about this puppy!!!! She is 6 months old tomorrow. I have all of her shot records and she is up to date on everything. I am wondering when to take her to the vet. A friend who has a yorkie recommended a vet so I will try that one but I have no idea if I should go now or just wait until she needs more shots (i have no idea when that is). I've spent so much money on "dog stuff" lately so I don't want to spend the money to see the vet if it's not necessary but I don't want to miss something either. I would really appreciate your opinions! |
Well, it depends on where you got her. If she came from a rescue, you will have full vet records and she will likely have seen one very recently. If you bought her from a breeder I would take her immediately, just to check on everything and make sure she has no issues. They will record her vaccinations and tell you when you need to come back for shots. Also, never, let toys, beds and clothes become more important than a good vet. They can live snuggled up with you or on a couch pillow, but no amount of fancy beds will save them if they have a health issue. personally "dog stuff" isn't as important as vet care. everytime a new dog comes into my home whether it's my own pet or a rescue which i'm ALWAYS taking in strays, vetting them and finding them homes....i always take them to a vet. when i purchased my yorkie she went directly to the vet for a check up...ran bloodwork and a whole list of panels to make sure she was healthy and i got my "moneys worth". even though i had her bloodline sitting in front of me i wanted to be reassured. so i would suggest u getting ur pup in |
I got her from a friend of a friend. She bought her from the breeder and had her checked right away. I don't want to neglect vet care but I just don't want a needless trip either. I am planning to have her spayed but I hear such contradicting things about when to do it. I've heard that it's a good idea to wait until after their first heat? Can I go ahead and do it now? At 6 months? She is only 2 lbs, does that make a difference? |
I think you should take her in even if its for a well visit , justs to get her familar with YOUR vet!!! They can give you her heartgaurd meds, check her out to make sure her she is okay and then talk about her spay! If its just a well check up in really isnt alot of money but it is money well spent... I took my puppy the day I got her, she had a ear infection and needed flea preventitive and heartworm meds... If the friend of a friend gave you her vet records bring them with you to make sure she was dewormed also!! Often times spending a little now can save you ALOT later;);) |
Sass is my first pet and we just learn as we go. :aimeeyork I would suggest a visit to the vet. Starting that relationship with a good vet is money very well spent. That way the vet can give her a look over and discuss anything you might need to think about, heartworm preventative, flea preventative, nutrition, dental health and spaying. Take her in. If she's not on heartworm meds, she should be.....you live in Texas, mosquito land.......especially down where you live. She should be spayed prior to her first heat.......forget about what you've heard. Less chance of mammary cancer and pyrometria......At the time you have her spayed, they should remove any retained baby teeth..... Being a first time owner is not a bad thing, most first time owners are cautious and worry about everything. Ask all the questions you want..... |
