How old was your yorkie when it was potty trained? I'm getting very frustrated with potty training. When I take Chloe out to use the potty she just wants to sniff and play. I can't wait outside with her forever. I sometimes leave her in the backyard and come in to get something done (lunches for school, go to the bathroom, throw a load of wash in, etc...) but she won't go to the bathroom unless I'm standing outside with her. Or sometimes she'll squat a few times and I bring her in and within 10 min she's peed in her crate or on the floor. She has no real schedule in her potty times. I thought by now they could hold thier bladder for a couple hours? During the night she usually does ok but still has accidents. We are already taking her out once or twice overnight and also right before bed and first thing upon awakening. What am I doing wrong? I see no light at the end of the tunnel and it gets me even more frustrated. |
Some of mine are still not.. They use potty pads. My first yorkie took me until he was about 6 months to completly train him. Is she in the crate during the day? |
I have been putting her in her crate. I am home during the day so I take her out fairly often to play. But if I don't have the time to pay close attention to her I put her back in her crate. Yesterday I cleaned her crate out 3 times because she pooped and peed in it. And I had her out not even 10 min before that to potty. |
Buy the book, "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" by Shirlee Kalstone How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days, Shirlee Kalstone, Book - Barnes & Noble It work wonders as long you become consistent. |
when she is peeing outside or pooping are you giving her a wonderful treat ??? I had the " million dollar " treat only used for potty training, as soon as she went I said good girl !! When we went outside I would say HURRY HURRY... as she was peeing all excited now at 11 months when I say hurry hurry she will pretty much go on command.. I took her outside every single hour during the day, GAVE HER THE BEST TREAT, till she got the hang of it, pee get a awesome treat , lots and lots of YIPPIE, WOOO HOOOO , GOOOD GIRL, NOW YOU GET A COOKIE...it worked like a charm.... it sounds to me that she is not sure what you want her to do outside... Make sure after you take her in and after the million dollar treat she gets a special playtime... pretty soon she will realize... wooow pee out here , get great awesome treat..( boiled chix, or cherrios or what ever she LOVES) and then a great play session before going in her crate and she will get the hang off it...also try attaching a expen to her crate with a pad , toys and I bet she wont go where she is sleeping...I used to get up at midnight and then at 3 am for the first couple weeks, so she knew go outside !;) |
mine was train at 3 months just by giving her a treat with lots of praise did the trick. She is 10 months now and now she just scratch on the door or hit her paw with the bell thats on the door to let me know that she has to go. No accidents since then. |
He was 7 months but i was super consistent and gave him lots of praise. |
I swear Winston knew what to do the very first day...so 8 weeks. He never had a single accident in the house or his crate. I was expecting a nightmare and got a dream, really. By all means be consistent and persistent...and remember to show 'em how special they are when they do it right, they are smart little creatures and will want to do the same thing again to get the same reaction from you. Make it fun not a chore...they love the time you spend with them. Good luck! |
In the beginning it's best to walk them out on a leash to one specific place. That way they know it's not time to play and consistently using one area will help her know that. Sometimes you have to wait 15-20 minutes >_< You might want to wait until she goes a few times before going back inside. If you don't see her go, then she has to go back in her crate. Did you get her from a breeder or pet store? Sometimes pups from pet stores are so used to soiling where they pee that it's very difficult to break them of that habit. That happened with my Chihuahua, except I have no idea of her past other than guessing backyard breeder. The expen with puppy pads may be a better idea at this point :( |
Frustrated, too! :confused:Marlee will be 22 weeks old on Tuesday. We did great until the cold weather came and now the Seattle rain has settled in. Now she doesn't want to go out, she will pee about 50% of the time, but pooping, forget it. I usually stand at the porch and am shouting what a good girl she is, and she has my 10yr old yorkie, Rocco who is perfectly potty-trained, even in rain and snow, setting a great example. So I am at a loss, but will jump on your thread for some advise! |
