Cheese Bad For Small Breeds????? I was at my cousin's house last night and we brought Tucker. His Nana was there and she loves dogs so we started talking. We got into the discussion of cheese and she said its bad for small breeds. She said it can give them kidney problems. she has a small breed dog who she fed cheese, and she said thats whats wrong with it. i was wondering if anyone knew if this was true??? i know a lot of us on here have babies who LOVE cheese, we haven't given it to Tucker yet, and now i'm not sure. so what do you think? |
Lord, I hope not. I give Chewy Cheese all the time! |

Our furkids LOVE Cheese!! I have never heard that before. |
We feed ours cheese once in awhile. |
I hope not!! Cali is on phenobarbitol, and the only way we can get it into her is with cheese!! My vet never said anything against it. Brooke |
Hmmmm...I have never heard this either and know lots of people that give their little dogs cheese. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything against it except that it would be bad for dogs who are lactose intolerant. |
I couldn't find anything on it googling. One site specifically said dairy products such as cottage cheese are OK in moderation for pets in general. Call your vet. I'll bet they'd give you the info over the phone for free. |
I don't believe it is true. I have had a yorkie for over 6 years. My immediate family as a whole has 5 (Bender, Simon, Carrick, Ivan, & Maria), and we have always used cheese slices to help disguise heartworm pills. Works like a charm :animal36 Our vet is even the one who suggested it way back when my husband and I first bought Simon for my mother. I wouldn't worry yourself over it. Ask your vet if it makes you feel better, but I'm 99% sure it's incorrect. ~LeAnn |
I have had 2 maltese before I got Copper...They both ate cheese. Spook lived to be 15 years old and Misty 16 years old. No kidney problems with them. They were both under 10 lbs...closer to 7.... Hope this helps. |
My vet told me to give logan cottage cheese & rice when he had a tummy ache. But my husband and I have noticed that any diary product tends to give our little guy the runs especially ice cream. |
I havent heard anything about cheese being bad. I mix it in my dogs dry food and they love it. |
I sure hope not It is definately Mac & Mellies favorite treat and BRIBE. |
I too give cheese but in small amounts. I do know that if given TOO much it can 'plug them up' aka constipation. When any of my pups get diarrhea, I do give some cheese, usually string cheese to them to help harden stuff up. TMI I know! |
Gus loves cheese. I don't give it to him that often. |
I think "real" cheese (not low-fat) is high in fat and might not be good for sensitive digestive systems, but as far as I know, it's rated a #1 treat/snack in most doggie households. I'm with the poster who administers pills hidden in cheese. I'll be anxious to know if anyone knows why it wouldn't be okay. CJ |
