Should I now feel guilty because I chose not to get a rescue dog?? Ok, so I just picked up my baby Wally last week. He is my 4th. I am in the dollar store today and I was looking at the dog toys and there was a rope toy that I thought was too big for my guys so as soon as it leaves my hand this woman picks it up. I say to be friendly that it is too big for my guys. I am so proud of my little Wally I tell her that I just got him last week and he is 2 lbs. She asks what kind is he. I tell her a yorkie. She then says,"oh, did you rescue him/". I said no I bought him. Her whole demeaner changed and proceeds to tell me that there are plenty of dogs in the rescue place and they really would love a home too. I'm like what?? Now am I supposed to feel bad because I chose not to rescue a dog??? I donate money, towels, newspapers, and toys to my local rescue. Am I now a horrible person because I chose to buy a puppy??? She really made me feel like crap. I love my 4 to the end of the earth and I was just trying to tell someone that I have a new puppy!!!:( |
Congrats on your new baby, enjoy it and don't worry about what someone else thinks, no matter what, someone else always has a different opinion but that does not mean they are right. hope to see pics soon of your little sweetie |
I am learning that there is a lot of competition in the world of pets: choice of breed, quality of breed, and rescue vs. purchase from breeder. As long as you are a responsible and loving caregiver for your pet, that is all that matters. :) |
:eek:Certainly NOT!!! Think of it this way, for all you know you saved Wally from becoming a rescue. ALL babies need a good home. Congrats on your little guy btw!;) |
:goodpost: |
Agree! I have noticed over the years that to purchase a puppy now is frowned upon, big time! To rescue or adopt is honorable, but there is also joy and good in researching, deciding, and choosing to buy a healthy puppy from a breeder who subscribes to the breed standard. How else will we be able to preserve the history of our beloved dogs? |
Congrats on your new little one! Have fun! |
When I was looking for my little one I did look at a rescue. I met the people and the dog once (it was a Maltese mix) but wanted my DH to meet the dog too. Well they accepted my application and everything was going well until I could not get the woman who had her to call me back! I finally got so frustrated that I gave up on that one. I found my Kona in a classified ad. I kind of feel like I did rescue her though. Her other family didn't want her anymore and I don't know what they would have done if I hadn't bought her from them. She is older (7 years) and bigger (10 lbs) than what people normally want in a Yorkie - but she is the best purchase I ever made! |
No don't feel guilty. All dogs need good homes. Enjoy your little one. You have a right to your opinion as well as the woman who was rude. To each his own. |
Not at all!!! That lady should be ashamed with herself for being such a rude witch! |
Thanks guys. This is why I try not to talk to people in public. They just aggravate me!!! I would have bought the whole bin of toys and brought them to the shelter. I don't like people trying to make me feel bad. She couldn't say, "aw so little" when I told her about my Wally, and moved on. I hate people! ('cept you guys:D) |
I agree that was extremly rude of her!! Who the heck does she think SHE IS!! The fact is she doesnt even know you!! People are nuts and very rude!! I wouldnt let what she said get to you bc we all know what a wonderful and giving person you are!!! Congrats on your puppy!! :D |
When we were looking into our second dog, we looked into a rescue. We were approved for the interview and home check for 2 yorkie rescues, and then were sort of waiting. Whenever I saw a yorkie that I thought would be a good fit with bandit, I'd call the foster parent but often times another couple had already contacted them and wanted the puppy, or there were some issues that made him a bad match. We were approved in October/November. Finally, in April I contacted a breeder as a possibility. I really wanted my dog or puppy right before the summer because I'm a teacher and I only work part time over the summer and would have a lot of time to train him or her. When the end of May rolled around we picked our dog and in June we sent our security deposit. We went away on our Honeymoon the middle of June and my mom watched Bandit. When I got home I checked my voice mail and a foster worker had two young dogs that she thought would be PERFECT for Bandit. Unfortunately the puppy was meeting us at our moms house with the breeder so it was too late. While I think it is great to rescue, certain circumstances prevent it. As long as you are not buying from a backyard breeder (which we unknowingly bought Bandit from:mad::() or a pet store there is nothing wrong with buying one from a reputable breeder. :p |
No... you should not feel quilty. As you stated, you are a full supporter to rescues in other ways that are desperately needed. You are actually one of the humans making a difference. That should be commended, not condemned! |
I don't think you should feel bad at all. I looked into rescuing before I got Fergie, but after seeing all of the health problems that they already had, I knew I couldn't afford to rescue one right now so it just wouldn't be fair to the dog so I went through a breeder. |
