My First Puppy/ A Couple of Questions!
 
I am so excited!!! I brought home my first yorkie yesterday. He is so adorable and playful. I love him so much already!

Oliver (Ollie) is only 7 weeks old. (I know that's considered young to be taken home.) He weighs 1 pound. I am taking him to my vet tomorrow (he got a clean bill of health from the breeders vet) but I feel like I should make sure everything is ok.

I have a couple of questions...

>How much should he be eating throughout the day? He didn't eat very much today, so I'm a little worried. He is drinking a good amount of water. I am using the food the breeder sent home with us. Should he be on a schedule or free feeding at this age?

>Is this a normal weight for 7 wks?

> He makes a little noise while he is sleeping, it's hard to describe. I am a little concerned about that. It doesn't happen all the time, just every now and then.

:wavey:Welcome to Yorkie Talk! You're going to love it here;). I brought Sophie home at just shy of 9 weeks and yes, most will say that's early for them to be separated from their mother and siblings due to socialization issues. Sophie didn't experience any issues however as she was already separated, eating on her own and well socialized. She was just over 2lbs at that time. I feed her small breed Eukanuba puppy kibble and their guideline I have followed is;1 to 4 lbs at 6 to 11 weeks they may eat anywhere from 1/3 to 1 cup. I always kept her water & food out and let her eat whenever she was hungry. She is now a happy, healthy 11 month old little girl and weighs 4 lbs. Be sure to keep some puppy Nutrical handy for her in case she stops eating and her sugar level drops. You will know if she becomes lethargic that she needs a boost. Post photos as soon as you can :D. As far as the sleeping noise, I'd ask your vet.

hi and welcome to yt, congrats on ur new furbaby olli, there is plenty of experts on yorkies here to answer ur questions, i feed mine eukanuba, but i posted about it to c if it a goodfood, they say there is to much chicken by products in it so i am on the lookout for a better one, hope u have fun on yt:D

Thanks for the replies. I already am a huge fan of Yorkietalk- as I have been reading the forum for a couple of months while waiting for my puppy. I am looking forward to participating in such a great community with so many experienced Yorkie owners.

I took Oliver to my Vet yesterday- (he had a clean bill of health from the breeder's vet but- LOL!) She said he is 100% healthy! YAY!

She did give me some Nutrical as well as a whole new puppy pack with loads of pamplets and goodies. He goes back in two weeks for his next series of vacinations. The Vet said not to change his food right now, as he is still adjusting to his new home - however thanks for all of the food suggestions. I'm sure I will eventually make changes to his food.

Welcome to you and Ollie. :thumbup: You sure did come to the right place. I was lost when I first got my Coco. Everyone here is so nice and very educated on what these babies need. Any question you ask there is someone out there who has experienced your issue and has a good pointer for you. I have found many tips and great ideas that have made this journey with my babies a pleasant one.

Can't wait to see pictures of him.

Glad to hear he got a clean bill of health from your vet too. I feed my babies Precise. It has no fillers, by products, no artificial flavors or any of that stuff. It's just better for them all around. They have a puppy formula that my pup is on and then I feed the Foundations to my older boy that we just adopted. I would just google it, get some reviews of a lot of different ones. Most of what you find in the stores (even PetCo, PetSmart) are filled with a lot of not very good stuff. Someone mentioned how it's easier to buy the good stuff because Yorkies eat so little...this is SO true. Good luck with your new baby. Can't wait to see him.

Congratulations on your new furbaby!

I got Missy when she was 7 weeks old. I did have to use the Nutrical several times due to her blood sugar levels dropping. Just keep a good eye on him, and have food available at all times. Also, I found that Missy got cold easily. You might want to get your little one a tshirt or sweater to wear.

Just thought id say that my 5 month puppy always has made noises whilst she sleeps, like baby noises. I dont think its anything to worry about :)
