Question about Yorkie Jacob is my first Yorkie and he is very hyper, I was wanting to know, if this is normal? Do you know anyway to get him to stop jumping up on people? (Like how to teach him down)? |

Yes it is normal. Mollie does it, she doesn't really jump. She just stand up on her hind legs and pet her front feet on people, but it's not really a jump. You may want to take him to some type of puppy training class. I've not tried very hard with Mollie to get her to stop. Most people don't mind. I really need to get her to stop though. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your first yorkie. I think a common misconception about yorkies is that they will just laze around on your lap, I wish!!! Mine is a little ball of energy too. I don't know how to train them not to jump, but it may be beneficial to register in puppy kindergarten at a Petsmart or Petco. I know many people have done it here and have had great results. The simplest guidelines are to pay attention to good behavior (down) and ignore bad behavior (jumping). Don't pet her, or let people pet her, until she sits or stays down or at least stops jumping. Ignore her. But it helps if you can teach sit, down, and even stay. Loki is really hyper too! I just do my best to wear him out, either by walking him or by playing in the house. He does his best with training when he is a little tired. A training class would definately help!! We did 6 months of obedience and he is only 10 months old. He is still hyper, but at least he listens to me! |
I took Trixie to obedience class, but the 'jump to greet' is the only thing the hasn't mastered. She just loves people and saying 'hi'. It doesn't matter how many times I told her to stay down, she still jumps... Most people don't mind. |
They are super hyper, and maybe classes would help. I think it's just in their nature to be that way. |

For all new puppys I recomend obedience classes. If can't attend a class, get some training videos and / or books. Start working on your training as soon as possible and all kinds of emerging undesirable behaviors can be controlled. IT's a great when you can teach your dog to use their energy productively (cleaning up the apartment for treats, closing doors, giving you a back rub). These things might sound really exotic and difficult but it's really not so hard as you think! A hyper dog is a dog waiting for a job to do. |

One more idea Loki will bark and run around the house and go crazy when he sees another dog outside because he wants to play. He needs playmates so bad. Well, our trainer said it's just because he wants and needs to play with other dogs - so we take him to "day care" every couple of weeks at our trainer's studio. He gets to run around and play with other dogs and by the end of the day he's tired and a little snuggle bug. Do you have something like this in your area?? |
