Crate Training I put my Kodi (14 weeks old)in a crate at night and he goes willingly and likes it and always has from day one without any crying at all, I am lucky that way! He remains in there about six hours (from 10pm until 4:30am) if he lets me know earlier I get up with him but he's like an alarm clock @ 4:30 almost all days. I work fulltime and leave Kodi in a baby gate playpen for 8.5 -9 hours with a pee pad which he faithfully goes on, his bed and toys. My brother, also a yorkie owner (2yrs old) says I should start leaveing him in his crate while I am at work as part of crate training. I would like to crate him all day as it is useful in potty training. I can already see this, the way he goes to the door right out of the crate in the morning, but I think he is still too little to crate all day. I am afraid he will pee and poop in there and that will not be good as he will then start doing the same thing during the night. So, opinions? Is he too young for 9 hours? Should any yorkie be crated for 9 hours? Lisa Kodi's new mom I know there are strong opinions on this subject, please be polite:( http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ser_online.gif http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ons/report.gif http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...c/progress.gif http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ttons/edit.gif http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...tons/quote.gif |
9 hours can be long, perhaps you should invest in an xpen? its a wider space? Fiona is crate trained and sometimes she is in there for 6-8 hours, and we go on an hour walk when i get home, but she has done really well in the crate..... |
This post feels like deja vu. What you're doing already is fine. Putting them in a crate for 9 hours can be a little long. Why do you want to change what you are doing if it works? Is he "going" inside on the weekends when you're not working? |
My post is deja vu. I accidentally put this post as a reply to someone else's post thinking I was making a new post. Then made another new post here. I will get the hang of this sooner or later:confused: Yes he does "go"inside unless I watch him carefully. Also he has begun tearing up the puppy pad I put in his playpen and flinging the waste around the pen! If I leave food and water bowls in there they get flung too! He also chews the carpet under the pen. If I were to crate him during the day, do I leave food and water? Doesn't that encourage him to do his business in the crate? Friends I know do not leave food and water in the crate. Lisa Kodi's new mom |
The ONLY time I put food in the crate is when I need Tucket to eat and I can't be there with him (he eats from my lap). Otherwise, I do not put food or water in the crate at all. Have you considered the potty patch? Someone even posted how to make one yourself. That might be an option...do you have a hard floor that you can put him on instead of your carpet? I have read that it can be confusing to dogs to go between a pee pad and outside which may cause you problems later. I don't know because I've crate trained both of mine and I'm a stay at home mom so I've been able to be consistent with them. Another option is crating during the day with water and having someone come and let him out once or twice and maybe even play with him before crating him again. |
