Runs away when leash and harness come out - odd behaviour
 
Hi everyone,

I have understood that many dogs enjoy going for walks - so much so that when they hear the word "walk" or see their leash they dance and twirl in excitement. My last dog did this anyway. My little Rocky seems to hate his harness and leash so much that when he sees it he retreats back into the room often walking behind furniture to get away!!

It is so weird - and I was frustrated today. It is cold out today - near freezing - and he needed his hoodie on too. This made things even worse and he really hid from me when I wanted to take him out.

Rocky loves walks when he gets out there and is very happy in general - he just hates the harness! He doesn't wear a harness/collar inside, only when he is walked. It's like his personality changes when he has a harness on. He is not as daring, bold, and adventurous. The same weird behaviour change also happens when he's in clothes. He absolutely needs clothes as it is so cold here.

Does anyone else have this problem with their Yorkie or have any solutions on how to solve it? I have tried the treat thing, it doesn't seem to work that well.

I would put the harness on him and let him wear it in the house so he gets used to it.

It might be a control issue, he's in control till you put a harness and leash on him. Then you are in control he may relate clothes to the same thing.

My pixie is ever so naughty..she will run away from me too when the harness comes out...I think its because she's not too thrilled with the buckle & velcro on her jacket harness!:rolleyes: she's absolutley fine once its on.

hmmm, Hot Rod has been doing the same thing recently. Well, since it's be jacket/sweater weather. I just took it that he really doesn't like clothing (which he isn't totally crazy about. But he has also been a brat lately, not listening or taking his sweet time with "coming" and being mean to Maggie May. Never thought of harness/clothing meaning that to him. Thanks for the tip.

Very interesting idea. I wouldn't put it past him. He is quite the manipulator (does the shaking thing as we have to leave for the day too). I think you have something here.

I think I'll try what Chachi suggested - leave the harness on while we're at home. While we're out I don't want anything on him for safety reasons.

If we ever want to calm him down and have him run a lot less - we put clothes on him or a fashion collar - takes the spunk right out of him ...

That's Reesie, too. If she REALLY wants to go out she'll run and stand on the bench by the kitchen door and wait for the harness. Otherwise, it's a chase around the house.

Fergie doesn't run but she gets really squirmy when I try and put her leash on but she gets so excited when I ask her if she wants to go outside

Buster loves to walk but Maggie is the same as your dog. As soon as she sees the harness and leash, she takes off. I have to chase her down to walk her. Once she gets out there she is fine, loves to see people and other dogs (small ones). I started walking her when she was young as that is what I did with Buster. I have tried leaving her at home but the last time I did that my spouse called me on my cell to come back and get her, she was standing at the door whining and crying. He swears that is the only time he has ever heard her whine. Crazy little dog, but she's my crazy little dog.

Sushi runs too. I think its because my husband doesn't use it when he takes him on walks.
