Fencing ideas I would like to fence an area about 22' square for Jonah to go out and pee! He would not be left out there for any length of time without me but I still want to make sure he would not be able to escape. I am thinking about a vinyl fence. How far apart should the vertical slates be and how high should the fence be. It would also be nice if the rabbits would not get in. |
Fence at Pet Smart Just get one of those vinyl fences at Pet Smart, that is what I have and when it snows I can bring it in close to the house. They are collapsable and roomy enough for them. I'm afraid to leave him out to long bc I worry about Eagles picking him up and away. I know they are around and I've heard its happened. |
I'm curious about this, too. We live on 3 acres of land unfenced, but I want to make a little area where I can just open the door and let Jackson out safely to go pee when I don't feel like walking him around on his flexi :P or at night-time. I do have an ex-pen but it's not very big, I'd probably need 4 of them to make a significant enough area. |
permanent fencing Thanks for thoughts on Petsmart but I am looking to put in permanent fencing and like Britster I live on approximately 3 acres open land. I am working with a landscape artist and she is not familiar with requirements for a dog this small. |
I use 2 metal xpens attached together and then out one end on each side of my sliding glass door and it works great. I never let them out alone but I an open the slider and they can run out and I just stay on the stoop. |
^ Funny you just posted here because I was about to link to your post when you replied to an old thread of mine, lol... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...r-ex-pens.html I have yet to do this yet lol. But I'm just now researching again. Do you happen to know the dimensions of those pens? I was looking at these: 48" Exercise Pen Dog Crate Cat Cage Kennel w/8 Anchors - eBay (item 130341095235 end time Nov-03-09 08:00:49 PST) But I feel like it's so small! Even with two, I think it would seem small, but maybe that's just because my boy is almost 13lbs. |
2 Attachment(s) The biggest issue I've been having, is our sliding glass door leads out to a patio and I want him to have grass too, so the area is gonna have to be even larger to reach out to the grass, here's a picture I took from my sliding glass door. |
We had white vinyl fencing around our patio area before we got Roxy. The kind you get at home stores & fencing companies. The bars are about 3" apart which is too far apart for most yorkies. DH lined the fencing with some 2"x4" wire fencing about 3-4 ft high, fastening it onto the vinyl with those nylon ties. I didn't think I'd like the way it looks, but it doesn't look all that bad since our sitting area is up by the house. It works great for her & she's got an area about 25' x 80' long yard to play in. She absolutely loves it. Some yorkies are great jumpers, so don't underestimate the needed height. The space between bars will depend on the width of your dogs. Need to be close enough that they won't be able to squeeze through. We've had no rabbits or even chipmunks up near the house all year. Think that's got more to do with Roxy than the fencing. : ) |
skinny yorkie In my situation I also have the patio immediately outside the sliding glass door, and pottying doesn't normally happen on concrete. The patio is 22' X22 ' My thought (because I never use the patio) is to tear up some of the concrete and replace it with grass and other materials, add a few plants etc., I thought perhaps I would need the wire fence between the vertical slats.Height ...because on an agility course Jonah never gets above about ten inches, 3 1/2 feet might suffice. On the other hand he easily jumps on my bed, at least 36 inches high. So I don't know if the different kind of jumping correlates. Thanks for the information I will continue exploring this. |

Thanks! Sounds like a great idea... I have only walked Max before. But a nice little turn out where I can watch them go and then they run back in would be nice in the winter. |

hmm The frame with crushed rock sounds interesting. How does the mesh fence stay up? Do you have a gate to the area or is it accessed from door? If accessed from the door how do you get to the rest of patio /yard. |
1 Attachment(s) I had the same problem inside and found the perfect solution. This pen is great, and it is pretty big! It has a nice gate to get out off (or in) and you don't have to worry about the puppy getting out. It is movable and has pins to drive into the ground. It is called the Courtyard Dog Kennel. |

I can take a picture. I'll try to get it up tomorrow. |

The mesh is attached to 2"x2" corner posts. It is only 2ft high so no gate though my DH asked if I wanted one...said no bother. It is 8ft long and 30" wide so I can reach her without stepping in anyway. It still seems very big for her. The 8ft is almost too long. It is just beside our back door under an awning type roof. I am going to post a pic. |
Thanks! |
Ok I am not able to resize the pictures to load them here so I made a "Potty Pen" album on my member page you can check them out there. |

Where did you get the mesh/fencing stuff? It looks nice. The only stuff I've seen is cheap looking. Edit -- Nevermind, just went back, you said Home Depot! LOL. |
That is AWESOME! Thanks for the ideas! |
I'm looking on Home Depot's website. I can't seem to find the black mesh. Maybe they just don't list it on the site? I may have to go by the store and take a peek. I'm determined for something cheap, esp. during these winter months that allows him to just run out and run back in w/o me leashing him up. My dad's house has a huge fenced in yard and it's sooo easy to just let him out and he comes right back in when he's finished his business. I get so lazy when I take visits over there and get spoiled. I bought a retractable tie-out, but it's only 18 feet long and the fact that he is on a "leash" he like won't move on it, lol. I end up having to walk him to potty anyways. He prefers to just lounge in the sun while attached to the tie out. |
thanks for feed back [B]A lot of good suggestions but I do want to spend the money to also make this a play area. I have a swing out there and it would be nice to sit on the swing while Jonah plays. And I want it to be an arrangement where I don't have have to put my coat and shoes on when I am letting him out, though at this point it will take training for him to go out without me. Now, he will stay by the door until I am outside too. We have a business in town called Paw Friendly Landscapes who I am going to work with to see what they can design and hope to post the results for all to see. |
I'm going to do a similar thing like MorkieMomm for an area in my backyard. I'd like to make it bigger tho, so I don't know how much more expensive that will be. I'm thinking 20 feet wide and 15 feet long, make it more of a rectangular shape. |

The mesh was in the same section as chain link fencing at our home depot, but I am in Canada so who knows if the store is set up the same. We paid $16.00 for an eighteen ft roll of 24" high. The wood we had from other projects and the most costly thing was the rocks. The amount in the pen came to about $22.00 I think. I always try to figure out the least expensive way to do things. I'm a cheapy ;). It is really nice to have the roof over top though, the rain has arrive with a vengeance! Good luck with yours and post some pics when you are done. |

Do you remember if they had higher than 24"... Jackson could jump that if he really wanted to. I wish I could find it on the website.... hmm. Maybe I'm just dumb, ha! |
