Puppy Pads... HELP!!!
 

My yorkie is three months old now and when we first got her three weeks ago all she would use was her puppy pads, but now that she can touch the carpet she has been using the floor more than her pads. is there anything that i can do about this? also, she has bee excessively biting the face and hands and i dont want to discipline her too much. is this just a puppy phase or can this become a problem? This is my first yorkie and any additional tips would be very very helpful :) thank you

Well, I hate to tell you this, but you need to stop the biting of hands and faces now! You don't have to hit her (in fact, I ask that you don't!) discipline comes in many forms. You should stop what play you're doing when she bites, put your hands up away from her, turn your face from her and act like you are ignoring her. This normally works if you do it every time as your pup just wants to please you and if you are not giving her attention she will hate that.

As for the potty on your carpets, it's way too soon to think she is potty trained. You need to keep taking her back to the potty pad or outside very often, when she wakes up, after a play session, after eating, every half hour or so. It's very demanding, but if you don't train her young, it will become a habit for her and it will get harder and harder for you to break. When she's running around your house you may want to keep a leash on her in the carpetted areas, this way if she goes to pee, you are right there to see and catch her in the act. Say a quick no or whatever you use for correction, pick her up immediately and go to her potty area, sit her there and say your go potty command, wait atleast ten minutes for her to go, if she does give tons of praise, if not, take her away, sit down with her for ten minutes, no play at this point, and take her back to the potty area. You may have to repeat this over and over, but you'll be glad in the long run that you did.

congrats on you new baby. You will need to potty train from the very beginning. You should figure out her signs of getting ready to potty and really focus on those. Keep treats handy when she goes on the pad and only on the pad. You would have a better chance if you crate train or have her in a small area gated off. This will make sure that she doesn't potty all over. You will need to take her often to the pad, especially once she wakes up, after eating, and during long periods of play.

I had to go back to gating mine off when I opened up the other half of the downstairs. It was just too big of an area all of a sudden and I found little presents. It took almost 9 mos before I felt comfortable with Hot Rod. Maggie picked up quicker, I guess because of Hot Rod. I did find a present not too long ago actually, but that hasn't in quite awhile. Good luck and you just have to watch like a hawk for the signs, treat when she does use the pad and be consistent.

I had a problem with my Maltese biting face and hands. Those little teeth are sharp. What I did was everytime she tried to bite me, I would just say no biting and put her aside or back on the floor. She's now 5 1/2 months old and I rarely have to say anything about biting. I have given her rawhide bones on which she chews and bites. It seems to be working.
