HELP! Paralyzed Yorkie Two days ago my 3 yr. old 10 pound male yorkie couldn't get up and was shaking all over. Rushed him to hospital where he still is in ICU. The MRI reflected a contusion on his spine causing complete paralysis from neck down. Has no pain reaction in front left leg nor can he bark. He is able to eat when hand fed. Has been rec'g doses of steroids and we are waiting for a spinal fluid test to rule out meningitis. Dr's prognosis is not favorable for him ever to be able to walk again. This just happened out of the blue, totally unaware of any traumatic injury occurring. Has anyone exp'd this? We've already spent close to $4000 in two days just trying to assess the situation. Please, any feedback would be truly appreciated. Copper's Mom |
I am so sorry for what you are going through!!! I have no advice to give you, but will keep you and Copper in my prayers!!! Good luck and please keeep up updated on his progress!! |
I'm so sorry that your family is going through this. I've never had a yorkie have this happen. I had a neighbor two years ago that had a boxer who had similar symptoms. He couldn't even lift his head up without assistance. He had a growth around his neck that was attached around the spine. They took the dog to North Carolina to a medical college that operated to remove it. It took weeks of bed rest, then he had to go to occupational therapy to start to stand and then walk. For the first few weeks he stayed at the OT place, and came home on the weekends. Then they moved it to daily trips for the day (every day) and slowly reduced the time each week or two. They did a lot of his therapy in a swimming pool and on an underwater treadmill. It wasn't OT all day long, but every hour for some time and so on. They were a military family that moved to Texas and we lost touch with each other. When they left Rollo was walking and I've heard from some that chatted with them that he was running again. I will tell you that I know it was close to $10,000. I tell you all this to give you hope for your baby. Are you comfortable with your vet's expertise? Is there a veterinary surgery center or veterinary college that you can reach out to possible? Please, know that you've come to a wonderful site with people that have tons of different experiences with their yorkies. I hope someone can offer you more insight into what maybe wrong with you little one than I have, but please know that I'm praying for you. Please, do keep us posted on how he's doing. You may educate someone else who has a yorkie with similar symptoms. :hands: |

I am so sorry for what you are going through. It is a horrible thing to watch our pets go through something we have no control over. I am keeping you in my prayers! Big hugs to you both~Joyce |
I'm hoping that your baby will be able to make a full recovery. University veterinary hospitals are often your best bet when you need a specialist. I just googled on your behalf and came up with a couple of links for you. Further research would likely result in more...
