Dinieangel :) This is my first post. I have a couple of questions since Katryna is my 1st Yorkie. I am having a terrible time house breaking Katryna. I think I made the mistake of using pee pads because now she will go outside, be outside with the other dogs and run back in like mad to pee on the pad. She isn't quite that selective when pooping. I have tried scolding her but all it does is hurt her feelings. She is very strong willed. Next, I ran in to a lady at the vets who told me I needed to shave the top portion of the hair on her ears or the cartilage would break down in the ears from the weight. Is this true? |

Try training her to poop on the pad by waiting till you see the walk. If your yorkie is anything like mine, there's a bit of walking in circles, the poo-poo-walk, and then the eventual theatrics for getting into poop position. This is plenty of time to take the dog to the pad, say "Go potty" and reward for correctly doing it. If you haven't taken a training class yet, I recomend it. Frankly, I think all dogs should go to obedience school as it teaches the owner far more than the dog, and those lessons are priceless. I recomend one that uses clicker training. Your trainer may be able ot evaluate the dog better than a person online, and tailor some potty training instructions for you. |
Diana Hamoth Thank you for the reply about the potty training. Any info on her ears? I have another question. Katryn sometimes has some kind of breathing spasm, like her nose is closed or something and she can't get in a full breath. My s**tzu does it too because he has a short snout and it is common. Does anyone else's yorkie do this and do you know why or have any thing I can do to stop it. I breathe in to her nose when it happens and calm her by talking to her. She is going on 7 months. |

Trimming the hair helps the ears to stand. also some people tape them. when pups are teething it takes alot of calsum and their ears dont want to stand sometimes. i feed mine cottage cheese. |
We had to keep the hair on my Minnie shaved on the tips . the weight of the hair made them fall over. The breathing spasm . Mine have them too all I do is cover their nose holes and rub their throat once or twice and they come out of it. Potty training some dogs would rather go out side then use the peepad and some do well on the peepad. You just have to keep with it. I raise my voice and say bad when they do wrong . then I take them out side or to the pad and tell them to go potty. when you see them go make sure you tell them how good they did and maybe give them a treat. |

Welcome to YT, I hope you post a picture! I didn't shave Princess ears, I let them be. They do stand, but not always, Thats OK with me. My vet asked me if I would like my ears to be taped, well, that answered that question. I didn't buy her for her ears. It takes time to be potty trained. Kids take a lone time, and after all Yorkies are our kids. I would never scold my kids, so scolding Princess would be out of the question. Good luck, and again Welcome! :) |
