Debate.... OK so I've been telling my boyfriend that I have started putting sweaters and clothes on the puppy because during the winter and stuff she can get cold easily and to hel keep her warm...and he disagrees because he says that she has a thick coat and she's fine...so I was just wondering if yorkies really do get cold easier or not..?? |
I'd remind him its not a "coat" like other dogs coat...its hair....hair is thin. I know if i'm outside in the winter..my head gets cold, so i put a hat on ...i dont rely on my hair to keep me warm. |
My Yorkie does not get cold during the winter months. My Yorkie has a cotton texture hair, and his hair is very thick and long. If he had a short haircut, then a sweater might be used to keep him warm. Right now, if I put some doggy clothes on him it would be used to make him look cute. :) |

OK thank yoU! I was trying to figure out a way to explain it to him..and I just couldn't! haha...see he's always had bigger dogs and so I have I...but i've been looking at yorkies for years and know that they're not exactly like bigger dogs...and he's kind of think they're exactly the same!! thanks again! |

This is a interesting topic that makes we wonder. I have several friends that live up north that raise yorkies and they let their yorkies out all the time in the cold to go potty and to play in the snow. Their yorkies love the cold and they don't wear clothes. I think if your yorkie it just running outside to potty or go for a brisk walk then maybe clothes are not necessary. It might really depend on your yorkie, their personality and their coat type. I think yorkies are like people, some are cold natured and some are not. |
Yorkies do not have an undercost like other breeds. So if they are going to be out for along time they need a coat. But for those in full coats it really matts their coat. So i do not put coats on mine. |

When I got my first one, I started out putting a coat on him the first winter, and he got so he wanted it on, he was cold without it, but it made a mess of his hair. So the next year I did not do a coat and he was fine without it. |

Yorkies may not have an undercoat, but my Yorkie with a cotton coat has a lot of hair like my Shih Tzu. My dog's hair texture is not thin like Yorkies with a silky coat. I get cold before my dogs do. I understand your point of view, because I think a lot of Yorkies get cold faster than other breeds due to what you mention above. |

I know with Ellie, a quick potty trip wiill get her pretty cold, but it's not toooo bad. But when trying to take a short walk with her when it's snowy...forget it. Even with a coat or hoodie, she tends to get so cold that I end up putting her in my coat and that doesn't even work great. So at least in Ellie's case, a coat is necessary for her comfort, or better yet, she really needs to stay inside. |
My first Yorkie, Chipper had a thick cottony coat and he never wore coats or sweaters and he never got cold in the winter. We have some pretty cold snowy days in New England and he would love playing out in the cold and snow. When he came back in the house he would have snowballs attached to his legs and under coat. Piper HATES the cold. She has a very fine silky coat and she freezes when it's 50 out. She has to wear a sweater or coat outside or she just stands and shivers. Put a coat on her and she is off and running and having a good time outside. |
I have hoodies/coats for when we have really chilly and WINDY days, that wind can cut to the bone and so I have them for those days. I like using shirts and sweaters when we go out because mine DO shiver and they are closer to the ground, too! |
