Traveling in car, long trip Hi, I will be making an 8 hour trip to see my kids tommorrow, me and Shay.. I hate to have him in carrier for 8 long hours, so I am fixing something up on floor board of truck. with harness attached to him.... Anyone have any ideas for car sickness? he used to do so well in the car but last few short rides he has gotten ill, in his lil carrier. |
Oh he would do so much better if he was raised up so he could look at the window...putting him on the floor might make his car sickness worse...:( |
Hmmmmmm I wish he could be too, but can't think of anything safe for him to sit on or in....any suggestions? |
ginger snaps are used to help with the car sickness, I have heard. I have chester laying down next to me, he does well, how old is your fur kid and how big. |
I think Petsmart/Petco carries car seats and here are some on ebay.. dog car seat, great deals on Pet Supplies, Home Garden on eBay! But if you wanted to make your own I would take a cardboard box and make it the bottom and then superglue another one on top of it and then cut the top off. Put blankets, pillows etc in the top box and then put the seat belt around the boxes. You should be also able to hook your harness through the seatbelt. I don't know if I explained it well enough for you or not but I do know your little one would rather be up by you...doing it this way you can put your hand over into the box .... I would also take some of her favorite toys and if she likes chew sticks put one of those in. |

Thanks for answering...... Shay is almost 8 months old, weighs 1.9lbs... I have a carrier that I can put on the seat next to me which that is how we always travel to vets and elsewhere.... I like him to be secure, so as not to fall....but it is such along ride, I would hate to keep him cooped up, we are leaving at 5am so to late to look for something at the store, I did look at petsmart the other day, but nothing seemed right size for him. with booster he would try and jump out, same as car seat. |
Max gets sick too, so I don't feed him before we go. At least if he does get sick their is not as much to clean up. |
Happy to report, we made the 8 hour drive without insidence! I covered seat and put nice big pillow that smushes real well and had his harness connected to seat belt...he rode all the way, with out getting sick!!! whohoooooo!!!! THANKS EVERYONE |

I usually put Abby in her carrier/tote, but when I picked her up from the vet's after spaying, I was afraid it would be too painful to put her in it (plus I was afraid she might be sick after being put to sleep), so I put a plastic laundry basket lined with a towel in the seat beside me. It was open on top so I could reach my hand out to comfort her and she could see out and she slept most of the way home. You could fasten the seat belt around a laundry basket I guess and fasten her collar to the basket also. A pillow on the bottom of the basket would raise your dog up to see out the window, that is supposed to help car-sickness. |
Now that I am here in MI, I will be making the trip home in a couple weeks (loving on my new grandbabies, for a bit)... I am going to go to petsmart and buying that booster seat thing for the console..... You just dont know how relieved I was, that the ride was not a tramatic experience for Shay.... This opens up the world to him...hahahaha |

Congrats and Yes it does, and he'll be looking forward to more trips! :) I think it's so much better for them to be able to go too. |
3 Attachment(s) We went thru three different car seats and none worked. They kept hanging over the side. Then we got a Full Lookout Bench and what a blessing that is. They have room to move around even thought they are tethered, they can look out, they can have their chew sticks & toys. We still stop every couple of hours for walks and potty so trips won't be hard on them. ;) |
Glad all went well!!! Nolee gets car sick also! |
