Our first run to the ER
 

Well, we've had our baby three weeks and have already had a run to the ER last night...

She discovered a fallen bee in the garden. Luckily it got her foot and not her face. I was concerned about weight vs dosage (she's 5 pounds) so off to te ER we went.

Two shots later all is well. What surprised me is how they found the stinger under all the curly hair! They showed it to us on a gauze. We were shocked. They said they get at least 2 bee stings a night. Sure enough - less than 5 minutes later here comes a beagle with a large, swollen face... poor little guy.

The shots made her sleepy and we got rare full night's sleep.

So, no bad stuff to report. Just our first scare.

Children's Benadryl is great to keep on hand. I administer 3 cc for a 5 pound dog. But you did the best thing, glad you got a good nights sleep.

Wow that many bee stings huh? Hope your little one is alright, I agree a vet visit was in order.

I'm so glad she is alright. My yorkie got a bee sting and he had a severe allerigic reaction. He started yellping as soon as he got stung and I ran him into the house in my arms and started running cold water on his foot and my husband and I was trying to find the stinger. Well not about 30 seconds went by and he went totally limp and was unresponsive. We ran out of the house and drove him to the Vet. On the way he pooed on himself 3 times and didn't even flinch and he didn't even seem to know that he did. He was totally unresponsive. My husband was holding him in his arms while I was driving and we were just hysterical, both of us were crying, he is our whole world. I called ahead of time and told them to expect us coming and sure enough when we got there they were waiting for us. The vet took him back and immediately gave him a couple shots and went in the back to wash him since he had pooed all over him when he lost his bowels. Scared the life out of my husband and I. The vet said he had a severe allerigic reaction to the bee. We now have to carry a bottle of pills with us everywhere we go just in case he would get another bee sting. So I hope everyone will be aware of their yorkies getting stung and watching how they react to the stinger. Some will have an allerigic reaction while others don't. We were lucky our's didn't die that day.

I would have never guessed that an ER would see that may bee stings in a night. How scary. Glad it turned out okay!!

My thoughts exactly!! I just pictured that poison in that little body. The vet said it was not uncommon for yorkies to go into shock - I don't remember the exact word... really big!!

Anyway... it's nothing to mess with. We were very blessed that she was OK.

wow i would have never thought that a bee sting could be so dangerous...im glad i know now to watch out for that anytime in the future and try to keep her away from bees!!!! glad to hear yours was alright!!

I am so glad your baby was OK was the word " anaphylaxis " or
" Anaphylactic Shock " I could be way wrong, but I have heard it before connected to reactions ?

He said this is common in small dogs from stings.

Anaphylactic shock

Anaphylactic shock: A widespread and very serious allergic reaction. Symptoms include dizziness, loss of consciousness, labored breathing, swelling of the tongue and breathing tubes, blueness of the skin, low blood pressure, heart failure, and death. Immediate emergency treatment is required for this type of shock, including administration of antivenom in the case of bee or wasp stings.

You have to be careful because some times you will have no reaction the first time and the second time you will have a big reaction.

They gave her two shots -

Benadryl (2mg/kg1M)
Dexamethasone St (1mg/kg1V)

at least that's the best I can read the handwriting on the treatment forms.
