First walk Will be taking Jake out for his first walk on Saturday now that he has had all his injections:).... any tips please never took a puppy for a walk before:doh:.... i have been letting him wear his harness in the house when i am at home with him.... is this ok... looking forward to all your help :aimeeyork |
I think it's okay for him to wear the harness indoors. My guys wear theirs 24/7 since it has their ID (also have microchip). You might want to try the leash inside (familiar surroundings) before you go outside. When you go outside, let him have freedom to walk, i.e., don't try too much control causing him to resist. |
I always keep in mind what would be comfortable for me if I had tiny little legs and was walking around barefoot!:) |
Don't expect too much too soon. It's a great big world out there & it will take him time to process it all & feel safe in it. Walking on a leash is something he has to learn to do & it's not going to be perfect for awhile. Be patient & Good luck! |
I also let mine wear their harness in the house with the leash on (only when I was home) so they could get use to the feel of being on a leash. And they all did very well |
Aw, Jake's a big boy now! ;) Honestly, I'm no good at tips for this because Jackson had no issue ever wearing a leash. I don't know why, it just came natural to him, I suppose. There was about 30 seconds of him being like WTF is this when I put the harness on him, but other than that, he was just happy to be outside. But I agree with everything above ^^ |
Good luck to you! I know you must be excited. Cooper just finished his vaccinations and will be going for his first walk soon. He is a bit worn out from today's vet visit and sore from shots so want to wait a bit. Besides it is raining a little so want it to dry up some. Let us know how it goes! |
Yeah you!!!! That first walk is so much fun!!! At first Sophie didn't know where to walk/look whatever, too many distractions. She kept going from side to side, making us change hands often with the leash handle. After a few minutes, she got the hang of it like it was nothing!!! Just be patient, it's a lot of fun!!! At first she stopped for every bicycle, squirrel, car, etc., then would start walking again. Once she saw that nothing would hurt her, she was good to go!!! It was a learning experience for us both!!! Good luck! |
Thanks for all your replies...Jake was not sure at first mainly when cars passed... had him up the fields today and he loved it... taking in all the smells and sights... he is lying next 2 me now sound asleep, think i walked the legs of him lol x:):D:animal36 |
