Dog Parks bad? Did anybody else's vet advise them NOT to take their dogs to a dog park in case the dog caught something? |
I've only heard of vets advising against dog parks when the puppies have not had all of their shots yet. Never otherwise. Jackson goes to the dog park 1-3x a week and never had any issues. |
My vets never advised that but I dont go because of big dogs and I am afraid of something happening plus I have a regular park a 3 min drive away so we go there |

No I never heard of that.. Pretty much if the dog isnt vaccinated then they should wait until they are.. But I am over dog parks.. Peanut doesnt really like them, he doesnt play with the other dogs all he does is sniff and pee everywhere LoL and stays by me.. After he smells really bad and I have to give him a bath.. So not worth it.. If he enjoyed himself and played and ran it would be a different story.. I have this big grass area at my Condos and I will take him over there and play with Peanut and his ball.. He loves that!! |

we have regular doggie play-dates and meet-ups so I don't frequent dog parks. the only thing my vet. ever said was be sure to get a fecal sample every three months if we do decide to go. Lots of things they can pick up at those parks. |
Zeke doesn't have all his shots yet but after this friday I can't wait to take him. :D Vet said to not take him anywhere until he was completely done with shots. We have a two dog park close by and there are separate small and big dog areas. Every time we have taken Zeke to the vet and there are other dogs he wants to play so bad that he starts crying. |

I've taken Xena to a few dog parks where she will ignore all the dogs but will greet all the humans! From what I've seen up close and personal, I will not be taking her to any dog parks in the future; just too much filth. Also, the health of the visiting animals is in question. I've seen bloody stools, bloody bottoms, drooling, sores, wounds, not to mention fresh feces that owners do not clean up for whatever reasons. I don't want Xena to pick up any nasties. I take her to the beach or to regular parks that allow dogs on a leash. |
My vet hasn't ever advised it. I made that determination on my own. Several times two of our dog parks have been closed for parvo outbreaks and even though your dog is vaccinated it is entirely possible to catch it....so no...we play at home. |
I never heard of a vet saying not to take your pup to the doggie park! Wow! I feel very lucky because here in NY there r soooo many doggie runs and then there's Central Park...I take Bryan to the small dog run and he has the same friends that he plays with all the time..we went there yesterday and as we approached the park I could here someone talking on a microphone and as we got to the top of the steps there must have been 250 dogs of all sizes dressed up for Halloween! I saw elvis, Michael Jackson, bob Marley, a bride,lobster,the mail man, a diva with sequins and pearls it was incredible!!! I love NY it very doggie friendly |

I think I'm really lucky to have such a great dog park around here. I take Jackson as much as I possibly can. At the least, once a week, and I can't imagine life w/o the dog park. It's truly a great way for socializing our pups, letting them burn off some energy, and meet new doggie friends/people. He loves it. I love it because when he gets home, he crashes for the night ;) |
Derby loves it! but this one time there weren't enough small dogs in the small dog side so they were on the big dog side! I thought I'd let Derby go at it since there were a bunch of small dogs... OMG!!!!!! lol!!!! Derby! always going after the big dogs! but did he ever get his butt kicked lol! and there he was always rolling onto his belly in the mercy! position! but after that- up and ready for more!!! what a guy. I had to take him out because he was getting nipped at, and as much as he thought he could handle it... even the dog owners told me "I think he's had enough for today..." lol they were all lovin' up on him and cuddling him... but he had some belly sores after that day. i always give him a good bath after doggie park day :) |
Actually yes. Not by my vet but i read in the newspaper around here not too long ago that a lot of dogs were getting sick and dying from drinking stagment(sp) water in dog parks...water that has not been changed and left for long hrs...where other animals like mice, birds, squirrels get into so i just never let mine drink public water..i always take my own water. Other than that i think it's ok..i just take them to the small dog area..and don't let them eat anything out there. |

It's not surprising that a vet would say that. i'm not going to say it's a bad thing to go, but it isn't for us. Actually, I'm more comfortable taking Ellie to people parks for some reason. I think it's because there is less doggy-disease present. With the yucky water that most of the dogs play in and the squirrels and toads, etc, and the bugs, and other dogs who may not be UTD of vaccines...no thanks. If I ever took Ellie to a place like that, I would only be comfortable if she was current on DHLPP, rabies, bordatella, heartworm meds, flea and tick meds, possibly lymes vaccine and a good dewormer, and fecals often. But there is no way that I'd want to put all that stuff in her little body. |
We are really lucky because we live in the suburbs and have a HUGE fenced in back yard. Although some of my friends bring their small dogs over to play, we always know that they are UTD on their shots and worm medication. However, I work in Toronto every so often and sometimes when I can't get a sitter, the girls have to come to Toronto with me. There is a park across from the hotel that we stay in (it is an on leash green space). But I feel so guilty having to take them there. I am sure I will be even more worried if we end up working in Toronto more often and having to send them to Doggy day care. |

I understand that!!! Not everyone takes care of, or treats their dogs with good care and have good hygiene habits, nor do they have the common sense to pick up after their dogs. They are just nasty, and I would NOT want my baby near that mess. |
