Sleeping Warm
 

I think Susan might have been chilly last night. She sleeps in her crate on a fluffy cushion, but the house was cold last night and I'm worried about her being on the floor. I wonder if I threw a blanket over 3 sides of her crate if that would help. Eventually I want her to sleep on the bed, but I want to wait until she's reliably housebroken. I let her up on the bed if I'm just sort of dozing after she and I have been for our very early morning walk and gone back to bed. She was shivering this morning when we came in and right now she's in bed with my husband with whom she's just now making friends. Maybe this "cocooning" will help that relationship. But what about tonight? We had a poodle when I was a little girl who wouldn't go to sleep until she had her blanket on and she'd carefully walk around the house in the on those cold Iowa mornings with the blanket draped over her back; she didn't want to lose it. Maybe Susie needs a blanket inside the crate,too? Maybe a baby's receiving blanket would be good? A little cat sized bed with short sides or even one with a hood might fit inside her crate. What do you all do to keep your babies warm?

I know they do get COLD easily. Since it has been getting cold at night... (38 here right now! :thumbdown ) Bailey sleeps right up against me. When I move he moves CLOSER to me... I'm gonna have to get his sweaters out. In the summer he gets away from me in bed,, but in the winter, he's the cuddle bug I always wanted. ;)
I covered Baileys crate once cause I thought it would be warmer,,then I thought ,,, it will keep the heat Out,,, hmmm,,, they have those little pads that hold in body heat,,, (no wires).
I do keep a blanket in his crate,, He uses it more for a pillow, but it's in there.

I forgot to mention that except for a coat in severely cold weather, my husband will have a cow if I get clothes for Susan! He grew up in a very macho home of 4 boys, a father and very quiet, retiring mother and we had one child -- a son. So feminine things have been hard for him to get used to even after 30 years. I have NO pink in the house. He says he'll spray it with "Pinkaway" if I bring it in. Pinkaway is his make believe product that banishes pink. I have snuck in a pink bow for Susan, though, and gotten away with it. (Well, actually, if you look closely at the silk flowers in my computer room/art studio, you'll see a few pink sprigs tucked in, but he pretends not to notice this violation of the antipink policy.)

you'll be surprised how men adapt to the DOGGIE things... My Bf was the same way,,about the clothes etc,, now he gets just excited when I order somthing! Tell him the clothes are about the WARMTH,,not the style,,which is mostly true.... :rolleyes: Show him how she shivers! OFTEN.

It gets "Really" cold here in Maine so when the pups are really chilly I use a rice sock.. That works pretty well.. :)

We were in Colorado this summer in the mountains in a travel trailer - it was about 37 degrees overnight. Rowdy was SOOOO cold (and would NOT weat the sweater I got for him). I got one of those thick soft polar fleece blankets - actually I just bought a piece of thick polar fleece at the fabric store (cheaper than a blanket) and I put it in his crate all fluffed up around the sides so that there was a little hole right in the middle. Rowdy would snuggle down into the hole and he stayed warm as a bug. Also, I put an old (flat) pillow on the bottom of the crate so that he was not sitting on the cold floor. Then I draped a towel over 3 sides of the crate but left part of the front of the crate uncovered so that the heat could get into the crate. In the mornings when I would roust him up to go out, he was as snug as a bug! :)

I use those cheap plastic stacking storage bins from walmart for doggie bunks in the crate. the furry beds fit right in and they are up off the floor out of drafts. They love them. The majority tunnel in under the cushions on back of the sofa at night. It's really funny to watch the sofa burp out yorkies in the morning.

I put P.J'S on Maximus at night and I have a huge comforter that i fold on the recliner every night...when I wake up in the morning..sure enough Maximus has burrowed himself inthe comforter and made a nice warm spot for himself!!

I'm a little worried about how cold these guys can get...it is starting to get chilly here in NYC and I don't have steam heat. In order to have heat, I have to turn it on myself - we have forced air units. Once I go back to work, I'm scared that Chewy won't be warm enough throughout the day. I have him in a sweater right now and he still seems a little cold.

i was just thinking about this exact thing.. i know their normal body temp is 101 .. soim wondernig at what temp do htey get cold??
if i try to put a blanket over him hewill move, if i put clothes on him like p.js his hair get knotted .. ughhhh .. not sure waht to do .. are there heating pads for doggies.. are they recommendable... or maybe a portable heater for my bedroom that doesnt directly hit him of course.. dont want him to cook..
man it was like 50 degrees this morn in nyc its crazy!! i dont like it one bit...
i was touching Chicles lil feeties and they were so cold .. i think imma get lil booty socks for him to wear ... :(

Judy's right, it was freezing this morning. I thought I was gonna cry. When I walked my husband to the F train at 9:30, it was still cold! Chewy was shivering, even in his little sweatshirt.

wow 98 degrees is hot no?? then the other side is 80 degrees... i wish there was one that YOU urself can control.

I can't stand it! The sofa burping yorkies! What an image! I burst out laughing out loud!!!

I'll probably get the self-heating one. I'm scared that Chewy might chew the cord on the other ones! :eek:

I have already turned the heat on in the house. Its getting cold. Joy how long do you heat rice sock in Microwave. I have one and don't want to fry the little one.

OMG!! My mother-in-law gave me these to put in mmy pockets to keep my hands warm. Can we use them for the doggies???

Judy: They are little pouches that you heat in the microwave and then keep in your pockets to keep you warm. I'm not sure if there is actual rice in them though. She got mine from origins.

You can put a crate in the bedroom with a heating pad. Yes, they make heated crates. I suspect that the dog will opt for the heated crate over your cold comforter anyday.

As for P.j's, you can get your yorkie a cool macho black hoodie with a skull and crossbones on the back. That's how I resolved my masculine sensibillities with Chewy's need for P.J's.

You can also get one with his favorite sports logo on it, or maybe the marine corpse seal, camo, or even hunter-orange. There's lots of non-lame dog clothes for the macho mut men of the world.

My yorkie has always slept in my bed since the day I got him. When I say in bed thats exactly what I mean, he slides in head first and I have to put up with his feet on the pillow all night long. He sleeps with his back to mine. And now he's ten he snores aswell. It's great in the winter as he's like a hot water bottle. Lisa

It is already down in the 40 's here in Indiana,I thought you just bought the clothes for show not to keep warm!! I will have my male puppy Tues.How do you keep a puppies shirt dry when he lifts his little leg and pees ? I sure have a lot to learn!!!I did get the nutrical,now have to figure out how much to give him ,when and how .I live in the country and our house doesn't have central heat so I will definetly make sure that Satch stays warm.I plan to start him off in bed with me,I sleep a couple hours at a time so every time I wake up I will set him on the peepee pad. I have a hospital pee pad that I will put on the bed and keep my fingers crossed that this all works out.I will have a crate in the living room for him to play in when I am busy,it is quite large so he can move around and play.Should I keep cloths on him all the day long ???

Get him a Belly Band and lots of Tena Ladys for the night time. During the day my yorkie is paper trained and always goes to the paper when he needs to poo or pee.

It's been cold here at night too and I've been wondering if Bailey and Charlie are getting cold sleeping in our kitchen. Bentley and Bitsy sleep in our bed...guess it's time for everyone to....SCOOT OVER :D and make room for the other two :)

Princess sleeps in our bed, she has a bed & blanket for nap time in the family room. But Mandy our Rotti sleeps in a creat. We put a a blanket over her crate, and it's nice and warm in there. She has a big blanket, and a little bear too. :)

Glad I was able to amuse...it really is quite the sight. Tousled hairdos and all. Gotta becareful when you sit down here!

Hi, if you click on the link I have sent you below it will show you a picture of a belly band. What a belly band basically is, is a piece of material that goes around the male dogs penis, for want of a better description and is secured with strips of velcro at the top. Inside the belly band, to keep the dog dry at night you can put Tena ladys which are very thin period pads that ladies use for their monthlys. You can buy these very cheaply and in lots of different sizes,and because they have sticky backs they will stay put all night and the dog will feel secure and there will be no leaks or accidents. If your handy with a sewing machine like I am, you can make a belly band very easily, I made a few so if theres any spills, they can be washed easily. I was recommended them by someone on yorkie talk as my yorkie suffers from old age incontinence at night only and because he sleeps in my bed there was always accidents waiting for me every morning so I was washing bed clothes alot. Since putting my yorkie in the belly band at night my bed stays dry and even my yorkie has learn't to hold the pee till morning as the belly band seems to retrain their muscles, I'm very impressed by them and so grateful for yorkie talks help.
