Another Question...
 
I have another question for you all... I am actually leaning more toward the NO WAY end of it to be quite honest but I wanted to run it by you all first... Get more then one opinion on it and I want to know if I am right in my thoughts too.

A friend of my sisters wants to breed her female Shih-tzu with my yorkie, I know nothing about breeding, and niether does she. She already has 4 dogs. Well I read up some on it, and from what I read all my thoughts are against it. Like once the male breeds all he wants to do is hump everything. Well I do not want that. I had thought about getting him fixed... Then read that little dogs cant be put under because they don't come out of it, UGH... Nicky is 5 pounds and I really don't see him getting any bigger then that since he is already 10 months old.

Everything in my gut is thinking... Tell this lady NO... Am I right to feel this way? UGH hate feeling like this!!

I would say no. I'm not a breeder, but check out the breeder forum. Does she want to breed just to make money? Theres many reasons why you shouldn't do this. Also, talk to your vet about getting your dog neutered, little dogs can be neutered they just need to make sure he can take the anesthesia by doing blood tests and stuff.

Definetly no!! And also he can be neutered. Bogie only weight 6lbs and he had no problems and Jada only weighs 5 1/2 lbs and she was under anesthesia for her dental with no problems. Just make sure you have a good vet who is used to dealing with these little guys.

Get your boy neutered! both mine are, and my Dad's was and little callum is only 3.5 pounds!

There is no reason to breed an intentional cross breed. Your friend is doing this for the money. Breeding should be done by folks who do testing, follow the proper genetics for good qualities and enhance the breed.

You will find your boy much sweeter and calmer if he is neutered, as well.

Thanks I will have to look into it... To be honest I don't know why she is wanting to breed. I just think its a bad idea. I didn't get Nickys papers sent in on time anyway so I don't think that he would be legal to breed anyway. Just frustrating.

since you aren't AKC breeding (yorkie x yorkie) they wouldn't register them anyway.

Nicky is already calm, and easy going, well except when he wants to play and be like a puppy does... Does that mean if I get him ficed he will be worse, or not want to play or do anything?

Since just going through my cat giving birth and losing 3 kittens there is no way I would ever consider breeding. It is not easy. Males also pick up bad habits that are impossible to break after mating

Thanks... That just finalised it for me... a great big NO from my end, she will have to get someone else then if she wants to breed her dog. Not my Nicky... I want him to stay the sweet little thing he is, I don't want him to turn into a little monster hard to manage.

Sorry to hear about your kittens, I know what it is like to loose kittens, at once we had at least 10 cats We ended up adoping them all out to people, it just got to be to much.

Not at all! It will help with marking and mating accidents. I don't think it will drastically change his personality, it didn't change Capone at all, and he's almost one and has never marked a thing (knock on wood :))

I am going through some what the same thing, my son's mother in law, has a lil yorkie 2 yrs old, they want to breed my lil Shay with her...

I have not decided as of yet, Shay will be 8 months old on the 28th of this month and is 1.9 pounds...I have not wanted to have him neutered, since he is soooo small, I am worried about the surgery and him being put under.

So, am I correct in hearing once they mate, they hump on everything? cause if thats the case it is a big NO, on mating him, since we haven't decided to neuter or not.

No way! Sorry but that's very irresponsible.

Get your boy neutered. :thumbup: It will make for an all around better pet.

Benefits of neutering:

Reduces the distracting and destructive behavior associated with the male's efforts to get out and find a mate

Reduces the urge to roam. This makes it less likely that you will lose your pet, which in turn makes your pet less likely to contract a disease, get in a fight, get injured, or become a victim to cruelty, poison, or traffic.

Eliminates sexual discomfort, distress, or distraction ... making your pet happier and more content.

Eliminates testicular tumors and reduces prostate gland problems.

Stops or reduces marking greatly.

Reduces the urge to fight.

Yea I have made up my mind, I am not going to breed him... For many reasons, 1 I bought him as a pet not a baby makeing machine, 2 I don't know a thing about breeding and well to be quite honest I don't really want the responsibility of it, and 3 I don't want him to be a big raging hormone if he did mate. So my baby WILL stay my baby and be the wonderful pooch he is!! Fixed that is so he can't mate!!

I agree with you, I did not get Shay to breed him, do I want another furbaby? YES..but breeding him was never something I thought about, till my son called and asked me to think about it.
Now it has me thinking more on having him neutered, I am terrified with the prospect though, he is 1.9 pounds...thats tiny, and is almost 8 months old....the vet said to wait till maybe 10 or 11 months old and we will reevaluate, then.

Well, I'm glad you kept an open mind, and one more thing I learned from Yorkietalk that no one has mentioned yet, is that dogs can get an STD from mating, even if it's the first time for both. Experience breeders who stud out their dogs, always insist that the females have been tested. The only way I would consider studding my dog is if I really believed that he was an excellent example of the breed, and I thought it was more important to have his genes out there, then of the importance of keeping his as a pet. Breeders make huge sacrifices, and your dog will change, if he bred and if isn't neutered. Joey was barely 4 pounds when he was neutered, and has stayed a little boy instead of a raging hormone driven adult. If you decide to neuter, make sure your vet has experience with small breeds, special anesthesia is used for toy breeds. By the way, the shelters are filled with mixed breeds, no one should be adding to the problem.

Have you have him tested for Liver Shunt? He's really tiny, and it's possible there's a reason he's so small. The sooner you discover whether he has it, the less chance permanent damage will occur, and in many cases diet alone will help. You would not want to mate him if he has Liver Shunt; it is passed genetically.

Yes, breeder had him tested for it when he was young, he had a lil twitch or shake , like when he was excited, so they had him tested, and everything was fine, said something about maybe from him coming through birth canal... vet said he may out grow it, which he has.
His father was 2.5 and mother 2.3 so he isn't going to get big, I knew that going in, but tought at least 2.5 or so.
He is really healthy and happy....just a peanut..lol

Not in my experience with our dog Mickey while it stops some of the male urges it doesnt spoil the way the dog is

Oh good, he's just tiny because his folks were tiny, but I have to tell you that any breeder who would breed a 2.3 female should be tarred and feathered, that is WAY too small. Minimum for mom is around 5 pounds, although dads can be smaller. Pregnancy is too hard on tinies, their little joints can hold the extra weight, and often have multiple complications due to pregnancy. I'm glad your boy is healthy!

I had been looking for a yorkie, for a long time, and reading everything I could get my hands on, to make sure, we would be a good fit.
I hadn't really read much on the bredding end, as in weight of mother or father, I just knew I wanted a lil yorkie, now when I say lil I was thinking 5 pounds was very lil.
I found the breeder and I went to see the puppies, she had. There was Shay and I fell instantly in love with him, she explained that if she could sell him she would, but not many ppl, wanted one that had a lil twitch, it just indeared him to me, I have grown children, so no lil ones running around (grandchildren a few times a yr, yes...but they live 650 miles away) so we were a GREAT fit.
Breeder gave me a great notebook on mother and father, and all test that were done at UT...and I imm. took him to the vet that AKC recomended (LOVE THEM)..one speacializes in small breeds. Had him all checked out, everything was good.
I appreciate you sharing all your knowledge with me....nothing better than getting some good advice from ppl that have had yorkies. thanks!

I just wanted to tell the OP maybe you should warn your friend about the dangers of breeding and all the knowledge and background that should be done so maybe she won't go and try to find someone else to do it.
