Fireworks Night approaching.!! Hi..not sure about celebrations around the world for Bonfire Night..but here in U.k. November 5th is fast approaching...My Dustie is already startled by any loud noise...so I am getting a bit worried about what to do .. With my other yorkies..they used to run around the house and bark like crazy..one I had to get tabs from my vet to calm him down. I don't like fireworks ...but I don't want him to sense this...and as we live in a Bungalow..they will be going off all around for most of the evening and possibly all the following weekend. Not sure how to approach this first November 5th for him...because what I do now will obviously affect future years. Any advice...?:) Chris |
You can take him to the vet and get him a pill that will calm him down for the night, or you can get Rescue® Remedy - Official Site i havent tried it but I have heard it works... if you are going to be home you can just be with him and comfort him.... |
You could ask your vet about a DAP defuser, my previous yorkies were terrified of fire works, I tried these when they first came out and they helped alot though you need to get one soon as they take a couple of weeks, also I read on another site that vets now have a non-sedative pill which makes them feel happy and relaxed, dont know what its called though, does help if you can stay calm and relaxed too. |
Lola so scared Hi, I just posted a thread about my yorkie being on me as i type, because there are fireworks going of outside....she is shaking and panting, it's like she's going to have a attack! She wasn't this bad last year, I don't want to encourage this but think she need cuddles! Poor lill thing, she's really scared. Laura xxxx |
I'm thinking that fatigue and distraction might be your best friends during this time. They say a tired dog is a happy dog; even if you aren't able to go outdoors to play because of the noise, some indoor fetch might wear your dog out so that he/she will sleep through most of the festivities. Also, buying a special treat that is time consuming, like a Kong toy filled with treats or peanut butter, might be helpful. |
There is another thread started about this also but Lee posted good advise on that one...put a tee-shirt or wrap them in something..which is suppose to help them. I also believe you should make them feel protected..the same way you would with a human child..and if their cage makes them feel safer or your lap do which ever makes them relax. |

I find that Ace-Pro is not effective, nor is Rescue Remedy. I hear people rave about Rescue Remedy, but I have tried it on quite a few pups for different things and never had success. Ace-Pro just makes them SO goofy. I hate that stuff unless there is nothing else that can be done. |

It could only be the Rescue Remedy. I looked at their website and cannot find ingredients listed. |
OK...I just found a blog that said that the Rescue Remedy for humans has alcohol as a preservative. I also found a link for it for pets that says it is alcohol free. |

There is something that I've had great luck with it's called Calm Downs, you can get it at Petsmart or Petco......I've used for my dogs that have reactions to thunder storms. What I like about this is there is no drug hangover. I read awhile back of a dog dying from Rescue Remedy....I've used it for a dog that had to be calmed down before ring time, he was extremely hyper.....it didn't work. |
get him a snug t shirt and turn up the televsion maybe if you dont want drugs... |
When we had them going off last year and Alfie was only 4.5 months old I got a toy and played with him. Repeated it over the next few times and he's fine, that has rubbed off on Rosie. Just have to wait and see what happens this year. |
well, between guy falkes when we were in Scotland and the 4th of July now that we are in teh states, poor Hamish never gets a break! He is the calmest dog I've ever owned except during fireworks or a thunderstorm. His heart races and he is quite unable to calm himself. No amount of rubbing, cuddling, or soothing him works, either. I have had good results with rescue remedy, in other situations, but not this one. We had to go the sedative route, because quite honestly we thought he might do himself damage. If we know the event is coming we give him a tablet well in advance and it seems to work better than if say a storm "blows up" and we have to give him one once his panting and pacing has started.I generally try my best to avoid drugs with the dogs, but, in this case, it really is the lesser of two evils for us. Nothing will distract him and he seems genuinely terrified. So, its either that or take him to France for the night! :p Good luck ! |
Fireworks scaring yorkie I too had that same issue, I live by the beach and every year they do a firework show 2 blocks away, it literally sounds like bombs are going off.. my poor baby was so scared. I closed all windows and doors, took him in my roon turned on the tv. and cuddled with him, constantly reassuring him he was safe and everything was okay. Luckily the show lasted on 15 mins. I once heard they had ear plugs for dogs, for these type of situations, I am going to look into it. If I find them I will post it. So my advise, try find the quite room in the house, and keep them in your arms the whole time .... Unfortunatley I did not see the fireworks show ... but my Rocco is far more important ...!:aimeeyork:) |

I also believe that showing the dog that it SHOULD be anxious {poor baby, poor baby...} is a great way to create anxiety. Try to keep you both busy, and as normal as possible. A great game of fetch, and a Kong, and a loud John Wayne movie... Chin-up, it's only a few times a year... set your selves up for a good evening, and build on it, each loud occasion! Remember what worked, and change what didn't. |
I need some of you to come here during some thunderstorms. I have tried everything ...except the tshirt...that will be next! Not all of them are frightened, but those who are, really are affected. |
