Help! I am at my wits end!
 

My 8 month old female Yorkie Mia refuses to potty outside. I am at my wits end. I have tried and tried to potty train her. Sometimes she will potty outside and I give her praise and treats etc. She knows to potty outside but it is like she refuses. I am to the point of finding a new home for her. I love her very much but I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any suggestions for a stubborn pup?:confused:

what do you do when you take her outside to potty? is she let free, or is she on a leash? do you take her to a specific spot or let her walk where she wants? how long do you stay out there with her? is she on a food/potty schedule? does she have free rein of the house or is she in an ex-pen/crate when your not watching her?

Assuming she's using pee pads inside, try setting the pee pad outside the door... gradually moving it farther away. Has she been places where dogs have gone before, like parks, daycare, playdates with other dogs other places or at your home? That really helped Roxy.

She has free reign of the house. I have tried puppy pads in the past but that confuses my other dogs and makes them think it is o.k. to pee in the house. When I take her out I will spend 30 minutes with her. I have 2 pet doors that she has access to the outdoors 24 hours a day.

Have you tried crate training?

With some Yorkies, accidents are just accepted. Some just never get 100% trained. My girl is eight "years" old and has to wear a diaper in the house because while she knows she should go outside, accidents happen often. Either I'm not paying attention to her asking to go out or she doesn't ask...

She shouldn't be allowed free reign of the house.....she should be kept in an x-pen with a pee pad......pups need to earn the right to have access to the house. If you're potty training her to go outside, put her on a leash take her to the spot where you want her to go.

Although my pups are pee pad trained when they go home, I tell my new families that being in a new household is a bit confusing for them. Pups will have to be trained to the area they want them to go. I also tell them to not expect miracles for the first 6 months of pups life. Your girl is 8 months of age, but probably is getting mixed signals from you.

You might need to start at the beginning again and retrain her. I have to do that with my lil GiGi (boy, terriers get spoiled sooooooo fast...lol) because she figures she's such a little princess that she can potty ANY place SHE decides. I thought she would rebel against being in her crate when it's not bedtime, but she is doing so wonderful so far, first day but it looks so promising.

My girl is a year this month and she was "trained" to go outside, the previous lady said she had accidents in the house often but I think what the problem was she wasn't being brought out on time.

Since we have moved last month we were up to having accidents quit a few times daily. I just keep her in her crate at night or when we were out of the house during the day. She gets fed twice per day.

As soon as I get out of bed, I mean jump out of bed and put a sweater on I go outside with her to pee. My girl is stubborn and will only go IF I am outside ON the grass with her.I let her go by herself and keep telling her " Go pee pee Lola ". When I finally see her going I praise with with lots of cheering! ( I bet my neighbors think I am a freak LOL )

I can say that we are down to a few accidents per week now! She can now be out at night time and hasn't had an night time accident in a few weeks.

Some dogs are just more stubborn then others, I have two dogs both the same age, different breeds.

I couldn't leave my second dog out at night she will potty in the house. She also has more accidents in the house then my yorkie does, it is just being constant. I have to take her out more often then my yorkie and limit her food/water intake which I know is not recommended with a yorkie so I don't recommend that. This was recommended to me by a breeder ( my other girl is a bull terrier )

Anyways with going out more often my other girl is finally catching on to thing I couldn't be more happier because I was feeling like you were, ready to kick her out the door.

I agree with the above that she should be kept in a confined area.If she runs the house she will just go anywhere and it is hard to break them of that.if she is in a pen or a crate then you can take her out every half hour or so . If she go's then you can let her out just with you staying with her for a free time of play etc. When you cant watch her then put her back into her crate or pen.

If she can watch the others go outside then that could help too

I find yorkies a challenge to train. I had one many years ago and I didnt know about crate training back then. She had the run of my house but used it as her own personal toilet for over ten years.

my furbaby is 10 months and he still wont do number 2 outside i can walk him for an hour and he still wont do number two .but as soon i take him upstairs there he goes is like he holds it until he get's upstairs is a little frustrating:(.but hey i will still keep trying hopefully he will do poop outside pray for me :).

At 8 months I thought we were never going to get Alfie fully house trained and then he started cocking his leg up the furniture, finally got him neutured at 11 months and shortly after he turned 12 months it just seamad to click with him. We've had a slight relapse since Rosie has been in season but I just keep takjing him out and he seams to be getting back on track. Rosie is just turning 8 months ans is still a work in progress.

I will keep working with her but I have already found a home for her I just can't bring myself to part with her. I have a female 2yr old Jack Russell Terrier that was so easy to potty train. Her and my Yorkie love each other so much I hate to separate them. I will give it a few more weeks, plus I am getting a Biewer male in December. I work all day so that makes it even harder. She knows what to do but just won't do it all of the time. I have never been so frustrated. I have always had Jack Russell Terriers that are a breeze to potty train. I have had 4 of them so it's not like I don't know what to do. This is my first adventure with a Yorkie.

How about just using the diapers instead of replacing her with another pup? I am sorry I mean no offense....but yorkies are like babies and I can't see myself replacing one because it's not peeing outside. (just my personal opinion)

I have seen the diapers but just thought they were for dogs in heat. I didn't know you could let them pee in them. Could you let me know how this works? I know I am having 2nd thoughts about the pup.

I think Crystal (Ellie May) mentions that she uses diapers on Ellie in post #5. That sounds like a better solution than giving up your dog.

You might want to reconsider getting a Biewer also...Yorkies/Biewers are one of the hardest breeds to potty train...everyday someone is asking for help...

There is something outside that your furbaby isn't loving--and its ok, it takes a small amount of time to get them used to pooing in the grass. My Lillie is crate trained and I think this has helped TREMENDOUSLY! At first it broke my heart to leave her in that cage, but she's on a schedule now and she knows its part of her life. The first thing she does when she gets out of the crate, is goes right to her piddle bad and does her thing. I HAVE to watch her though, because if I'm not there observing, she WILL go on the carpet. We are gradually moving to outside. Maybe try following a schedule? Here's what we do:

---7am-UP and TO the piddle pad, back to crate bed till 8am
---8am-9:30 breakfast and playtime!
---9:30am-12noon crate time or we like to call it "Lillies Personal Time" ;)
---12-1:30 OUTSIDE to potty immediately, lunchtime, and playtime
---1:30-5pm crate time
---5pm-7:30p OUTSIDE to potty immediately, dinner time and playtime!
---7:30-9pm - OUTSIDE potty time (again before bed)
---9pm Bed Time!

I know I sound like a drill sergeant but its not as hard as it seems. I PROMISE that if you found a new home for your little one, you will regret it and miss her dearly! It'll work out, just takes time! =)

The best advice I was ever given about training outside worked so fast, but all yorkies are different.

I use an x-pen instead of a crate because Capone never soiled his pen. Outside if she doesn't use the bathroom then back into the pen. Then after 10 minutes back outside. You may have to do it 2 or 3 times and she will realize the only place she is going to go is outside. Once she goes outside you can have play time in the house until you think she has to go again.

And when you take her outside put her on a leash and don't let her go anywhere or play besides the area she can reach on the leash so she doesn't forget she has to go.

It worked for me. Good Luck. I hope she doesn't have to find a new home.
