Do yorkier puppies always require a lot of care? Hi Everyone! I have a quick question about caring for our new bundle of joy. We picked up Abbey on 10/4/09 and have been to the Vets office 3 times as of today 10/19/09. The first trip was a 6 days after we got her home (10/10/09) for Hypoglycemia caused by giardia and us not watching her food intake close enough. Yesterday 10/12/09 was the follow-up and when i picked her up from home to go to the vet she was shivering and panting, the vet said that was normal. Today 10/13/09 after another night of little sleep (she sleeping maybe 4 to 6 hours a day), I took her to our reg vet and he found she also had coccidiosis. He thinks the shiveres and panting are caused by us giving her to many calories with the A/D food and Nutri-cal so we are backing off this food slowly. Please let me know what to do, She is so sweet and lovable but is really impacting us with no sleep and ever waking hour trying to make sure she eats and is OK. Help! |

Your question is do yorkie puppies require a lot of care. To some extent yes, monitoring their activity, making sure they eat properly, not allowing them to jump on and off furniture and human contact. What you are experiencing with your yorkie is a bit unusual....as the person asked above how old is your pup and how much does she weigh. Over doing the NutriCal can promote hyperglycemia and can cause diabetis. |
Yorkies are unlike any dog Ive ever known. They are special in a way I find hard to explain. Perhaps its just me lol but yes they do need more care than regular dogs. |
Thanks for the feedback Thanks for the feedback. Sorry I forgot to put this in the first one. She was born 7/28/09 so a little over 10 weeks old. She is currently about 1.2 lbs if the scales are close when we picked her up she was 1.6 lbs. let me know what you think and thanks again. |
In answer to your Title question, yes, & more so when they are as young & tiny as your little girl. It doesn't help that she had parasites, & likely meds to get rid of them. Make sure you get expert advise (provided by your vet & YT members). |
I've noticed that Yorkies get the shivers a lot, but with my girl, its when shes scared or cold from taking a brisk walk. If your puppy is sick and the shivers don't calm down within 30 minutes, I'd maybe keep up with the vet--if you don't feel the vet is giving you answers and you KNOW something is not right, try another vet, asap. She's a tiny little thing at just over 1 1/2 lbs, so you will definitely need to monitor her eating for a good while longer. My Lillie is over 17 weeks and I still have to keep an eye on her constantly. It may seem excessive but just think of how worth it it all is. :) |
This is one of those "thats why good breeders don't let you take a puppy home before 12 weeks" things. Yes, tiny dogs do require some extra effort, but part of what you are experiencing is that your dog should not have left its mother for another 2 weeks. That extra time with mom really helps the little guys out. They are NOT retrievers, they need the extra time, to get past hypoglycemia issues, learn manners from their mom and littermates, and to ultimately mature just a bit more to catch up with their larger cousins. things should level off, but the level of parasites and the age you were allowed to have your pup makes me question the breeder and if you might have issues later on down the line. Good luck....and remember, they are just like infants at this point. The need fed, walked, cared for the same way a newborn would. |
A puppy that small should not have been sent to new home. My 6 week old puppies are bigger than that and I would not think of letting them go. I have never gotten one that needed veterinary care. So sorry for your bad experience. I hope she gets well soon. |

When we got our Eva she had Coccidia and Giardia and both ears were infected and she had a nasal infection. The first month and a half was harder than when I came home with both my newborn children, the clean up and extra bathing because of the parasites on top of the regular puppy care and potty training, well it is really hard. Nursing and changing diapers was a piece of cake compared to caring for our Eva. Still, it was so worth it. Puppies can get really sick and it seems they get it all at once. Give it a month or so more and you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Eva is coming up to six months now and we love her so much. We nursed her through a real rough patch and it made us love her even more. It does impact a family. Everyone gets grumpy and is just so tired. I hope things get better for you soon. |

Unfortunately, I find the tiny ones do require lots of care. My Baby Zoey was like that for the first year of her life. My husband and I started calling her our Million Dollar Baby. Hang in there, it does get better! |
