My Lucky has to go!!! So i havn't posted sine 2007. it's been a while yorkie talk and I need your help. to make things quick my sweet luck is a BARKER I have had this problem with him for a while. Recently this has caused major problems with one of my neighbors (who complains about everything). I have tried everything except put one of those barking collars on him. My landlord says if I cant control him than I have to get rid of him!!! so the question is "how do you tell your kid that they have to get rid of their dog"? |
i'm sorry, that's a crappy situation your in. why have you not tried the collar? at this point i'd be willing to try anything. i've used a citronella collar in the past on my toy poodle and it worked great. |
Barking is bad behavior and can be corrected. It just take consistency. You have to get one him each and every time. When mine are outside and insist on barking, I make them come inside where I can correct the problem. I live on an acreage so the neighbors do not complain. But I cannot stand the barking, so I make them stop. |
Have you tried a spray bottle? You can put a bit of vinager in the water and spray him when he barks. You have to be carefull not to get it in their eyes. Actually I found if you just spray it infront of them the smell is enough to stop them. Keep consistant and don't give up!! good luck |
Petmart has a devise (i think it is shaped like a birdhouse) that you can place inside or out, that deters barking. I have a coworker who purchased one for outside and he says it works great. |
![]() This also has very good feedback!! For 15 bucks its worth the try! I believe there is someone on this board that used the birdhouse for the same reason, NEIGHBOORS complaining.. she raved about it and her pups no longer bark... |
I hope everything works out and you can keep him:( |
I just ordered it, I will let you know if it works. I have 3 barkers and I am also hoping it will stop Pixie from waling me all night if i is it when she wakes me up. |
My next door neighbor uses the birdhouse. We live in a condo and she has a Jack Russel that another neighbor complained about. The birdhouse works like a charm. Whenever he barks it makes a noise that only dogs can hear and they don't like. He doesn't bark hardly at all any-more. One day since then he was barking like a fool. She realized the battery had died and put a new one in. No more barking. It doesn't seem to hurt him at all. He just doesn't like the noise it makes. |

To the OP, I think I would move before I got rid of the dog, I think you are sending your son a horrible message if you decide to get rid of the dog, this can be a chance to teach your son something really important about pets and our responsibilities to them. |
I hope things work out for you, and you don't have to rehome your dog. All three of mine love to bark at neigbhors dogs, and when they do I call them in, and try to correct them. |
I've posted this before but it worked so well for me I will post it as often as need be. Skeeter was a horrid barker and he would stir up the others. I rolled up newspapers and secured them with rubber bands. I then left then all over the house where I could grab them in seconds. Whenever he barked I would smack the newspaper down as hard as I could on the coffee table, kitchen counter, my hand or the wall - what ever hard surface was close enough. It makes a wonderfully loud noise. I would also sternly say "Quiet" right after that. I kid you not when I say I only had to do it once or twice before he stopped barking. A couple more times after that he stopped when I grabbed the newspapers. Now he only barks at times when any other dog would bark (like an unfamiliar noise) but he stops when I say "quiet." You don't want them to stop barking all together. They need to bark to let you know if something is wrong. From time to time I have to take a newspaper outside with us and he keeps one eye on whats going on in the yard and one eye on me wondering if I'm going to make that awful noise. But he doesn't bark! Good Luck. |

The birdhouse sounds like a much better alternative to a bark collar. I might look into one. It would also work if your neighbor has a barking dog. LOL |
