Potty Training Help I am trying to start potty training my 8 week old Yorkie. Does anyone have any tips or anything that worked from them? I have a potty pad by his food and water bowl in my bathroom. What I have been doing is just taking him a lot, which he does pee outside some when I take him. And when he does poop or pee on the floor, I show him and tap him on the nose or butt and I take him outside. Is there anything else I should do? Am I doing anything wrong? |

I do not think that you should be tapping him on the butt or nose though... that is not an effective way to potty train. It will teach him to try and hide his messes. You want to reward, and not punish, so catch him when he is going where you want him to and praise, praise, praise. Yorkies can take up to a year to potty train, so be very patient. I got Couver at 5 months old, and he is now a year, and still not 100% trained. Good luck! |
I agree. 8 weeks is very young. It's recommended to start a rigid food and water schedule at 12 weeks. CouversMom is correct. Your puppy won't understand why he's in trouble. If you catch your puppy in the act yell, "No," and then immediately take him to his potty spot. CouversMom is also correct in not giving your puppy so much freedom. A puppy won't potty where it sleeps. Crate your puppy or gate off a very small area so all that would fit is his bed. A puppy that young cannot hold for very long. This includes during the night. Once he reaches 12 weeks, you can withhold his food and water and give it only three times a day. Then you will know when he has to go. You may want to invest in "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days." It will take longer than 7 days, but it is how I've housebroken my Sydney. She's 4 months old and doing wonderful using the pads.
