Quick Question I have a new 14 week old yorkie puppy; the breeder asked us to feed him twice a day but he is still hungry. We have been giving him snacks throughout the day but we were wondering, is there any reason why a puppy a should only be fed twice a day? Thank you! |

Where dis your breeder get the idea to only feed twice a day? At that age it should be at least 3 if very tiny maybe 4 as their tiny stomachs cant hold much food. Snacks wont help much to aleiviate her hunger. |
I agree that the minimum should be 3 times a day, also depending on how much they eat it could be 4 or 5 times. My mom's little maltese only at less than a table spoon at each feeding, so she had to feed her more often. Hope this helps, and congrats on your baby! |
thank you all so much for your help & well wishes! I will definitely feed him 3 times a day |
I also think 3 times a day would be more appropriate for a puppy. |
Most yorkies are free fed unles they want to overeat, which is rare for a yorkie to do. I free feed all of mine, puppies and adults. Somedays they eat every crumb and want more, other days they don't even finish it. So suggest free feeding unless you notice as tendency to overeat. I also believe that limiting their food can cause them to gorge themselves, because their brain tells them that food is scarce. |

I'm with everyone else. I feed my 5 mo pup 3 times per day at 1/4 cup per feeding...he's a hog! Anyway, my breeder also said 2 times per day, but (like your pup) my pup "Patch" always still seemed hungry...so I read up on this site an discovered should change to 3x/per day! Good luck! |

I feed 3 times a day. I would love to be able to free feed, but Kimbo is a huge piggy. He would eat until he threw it all up if I let him. He's always had a huge apetite. He's 5 months old and 3 lbs. This used to worry me but the vet has tested him and says he's completely healthy! |

We leave kibble and water out all the time for our Yorkie. We always have. She uses the washable pee pads and was potty trained when she came to us from the breeder. We never had to "train" her because she learned the behavior from her canine mother. I didn't fully realize what a gift this fact was until reading about the trials of housebreaking some puppies. Our breeder didn't consciously train her but Taffy picked it up from watching and imitating her mother. In fact, our breeder warned us that Taffy might have accidents while she adjusted to her new forever home but she didn't. (Once in awhile she may miss the pad just a tad but it's never blatant.) After reading so much on here about how fast puppies can fade from low blood sugar, I would have been very afraid not to free feed. She'll be 10 months old late this month so I suppose those fears can be put to rest but I will probably still leave the kibble out for her. |
thank you! |
