Questions about breeding
 

My Bayley is coming into heat every 8 months which the doctor thinks is fine with her being so small. She's about 5 lbs. Her 3rd heat is coming up and I plan to breed her. This will be the one and only time. My daughter would like a puppy so that is our purpose. We have a nice healthy male dog that weights right at 3 lbs. I have been told finding a smaller male is important. We do not know what the usual fashion is though as for the "stud fee". they may want pick of the liter which is fine, as long as she has more than 1 - if she only has one it is for my daughter. How do we work this out? D we say pick unless there's only one and then we give you $? If so, how much? I'd appreciate any and all info/advice you can give. Thanks. :animal-pa

Honestly, I'm not trying to be rude, but breeding your female simply so your daughter can have a puppy is very irresponsible. MANY risks go along with breeding a female and have risks of dying while giving birth. Puppies can also die, so be prepared for that. I would just let her be a pet and get her spayed. :thumbup: Millions of animals are euthanized every day, why add to the overpopulation of dogs? Many, many things go into breeding. Leave it to the professionals who know what they are doing! I understand everyone has to start "somewhere" when becoming a breeder, but you're saying you only want to breed her once? Please just look into the responsibility that goes along with breeding your dog and understand you may no longer have simply a pet anymore. Female dogs have a tendancy to change after giving birth and will no longer be your little girl. Is giving your daughter a puppy worth possibly losing your pets life? When she can just go to a respectable breeder and get a puppy or go to a shelter and rescue one?

I know you mean well in your thoughts of breeding but I see far too many people who think breeding is such a fun thing, and realize how hard it is. I'm not a breeder, personally, so hopefully someone with more experience can answer your questions, if you in fact decide to go through with this. But I do believe you should spay her and leave her as your beloved pet!

LOL! :) I know you meant well with your first response. I agree with you about breeding her. So many people think it's just a "get her pregnant, pop out the pups, and give them away or sell them smiling" situation, and then everything will go back to normal. But in reality if she wants to let her baby have babies it's her choice.

If you have a reputable breeder that you purchased this pair from my suggestion would be to refer back to her. If you are not able to do this them I would say that it would not be a wise decision to even consider breeding. I am wondering where/who you purchased both your female and male from? Do you know their background and lines? Regardless of their size it is very important to know the background of your dogs prior to even considering to breed. Are there any health issues in their background such as LP, shunts, defects~these are all questions that need to be thought about prior to breeding? What happens if your little girl needs assistance during the birth or even a c-section are you going to be prepared to birth (whelp) a litter of puppies? Are you prepared for large vet bills if a csection is needed? Are you prepared to become a surrogate mother if something were to happen and the mom refused to nurse or god forbid died? :( After contemplating all of this are you willing to take a risk to give your daughter a puppy. It would be much less risky to have them both spayed/neutered and purchase a new puppy from a very experienced reputable breeder that you can find right here on YT. There are WAY too many complications that can arise when a novice like yourself decides to breed tiny dogs like Yorkies to give a puppy to a family member. :( There was a post just last week about this happening and it was a very sad and upsetting outcome.

Just another thought...
If you are paying a stud fee why not just get another puppy.... the price is usually the same and way less hassle.

If the price is the cost of a puppy or pick of the litter, than make sure that they guarantee more than one puppy. otherwise all you have done is produced a puppy for the stud owner.

I persolnally would not go for pick of the litter. I would prefer to pay the fee, than to have them take my best puppy.

I charge a $500 stud fee, and guarantee more than one puppy.

Many things to consider prior to breeding. Lots of info on this forum to glean from. But, breeding to provide your daughter a pup, isn't the best reason to do so. As a person above stated stud fee is the cost of a pup, just buy your daughter a pup.

In the yorkie breed, breeding a smaller male to a larger female is a misnomer. It may ring true in other breeds but, not in the yorkie. Much more to breeding this breed than putting two dogs together.

Every 8 months for a yorkie female to come into Season is average and it has nothing to do with size. If one has studied the breed, breeding, whelping and breeding to improve the breed, one does not breed a female until 18 months of age or 2nd Season and she should be bred the first time before she turns 3. However, for every Season a female experiences without being bred you are putting her life in jeaporady.....mammary cancer, pyropmetria. I suggest you spay your girl.

Welcome to YT!! This is your decision of course... it is your dog:) I have a little girl that is just under 5 lbs and there is no way that I would risk her life for a puppy for anyone. That is just how I feel. I would tell my children that they would need to save up their money and find a good breeder 'cause I am not risking my baby's life:animal-pa Good luck with your decision, I'm not trying to be rude..... I just really have a huge place in my heart for my babies! You will find alot of great info on this site... maybe post in the breeder section, there are some great people who are very experienced who will give you good advice.

There are very experienced breeders that posted here no need to look any further. The 2 posts right about your are respected breeders.

To the OPer, maybe you should look into some one the breeders that have puppies for sale on the forum. There are many members that are have purchased from them.........just a thought :)

I know that Mardelin and JeanieK are very well respected breeders. I was only speaking my opinion on the way I felt about my babies. Didn't mean to offend anyone.

I know and you know that they are~but I was stating it for the OPer since I'm sure they didn't know. :)

I am not a breeder, but I hope to be at some point, and I have done a lot of research. If all you want is one more puppy for your daughter, I STRONGLY suggest just finding a good, reputable breeder to buy a puppy from. In the end, it is your choice, but you need to think of the possibility of your daughter seeing the puppy (or puppies) and mother die. There's a LOT of time and effort needed to produce a single litter of puppies, and if all you want is a dog for your daughter, please find a breeder to buy one from!

:animal-paThanks for all of the replies. I have taken them into consideration and have finally decided that I will not breed Bayley. I have emailed the person who has the male to let her know that I cannot risk my baby girls life or her attitude for the matter. We love her as she is and I would hate it if she changed after becoming a mother or even worse she didn't make it through the delivery. I have let my daughter know it's time to just start saving her $$$ to buy herself a yorkie puppy.
