Need information, just adopted a female
 

Hello everybody, I've looked around and this seems like the best place to get some information :). Tuesday I adopted a Yorkie female from one of my son's friends mom.(She brought two home from a lady at work who's daughter passed away) She is a very loving dog already, and has taken to myself and my son, but seems terrified of any men who come into the house. The possibly bigger problem is that her( my son's friends mom) mini poodle locked with her on Saturday. From what I've read, she only would have allowed that if she was in heat, and if so there is a very good chance she's pregnant, right?

Her coat was pretty mangled, so I took her into a groomer, and he said she looked older than 4 yrs old ( which is the age I was told). She also seems to have some teeth issues( really bad breath and tartar), and is missing the bottom front two.

I am currently looking for a great vet in my area, but I guess I don't really know which issue is the most important, and what questions I should be asking. Any referrals or helpful information would be greatly appreciated.

It seems she was not taken care of very well with the teeth and hair issues and she might have been mistreated by some man. I wish you the best with her and have patience, because seems she's been through a lot. I hope you have a great vet and groomer for her as well. Maybe she might not be pregnant too.

I am reading conflicting information on what you should feed a pregnant Yorkie, are there any breeders with suggestions? I think it would be better to go ahead and treat her like she is pregnant until I can find out for sure. ( or should I just feed her what shes been eating ) I just made her vet appointment for the 26th, they said pregnancy testing would be pretty accurate by then.

I was also wondering if anybody had any experence with how I can get Bella to be more comfortable around men, especially my husband. When ever he walks into the room she runs and hides, she will not let him pet her, and forget about taking her outside. If I take her out and he comes with me, she will walk, but stays as far away from him as possible.

Thanks for any help! I just want to make sure she gets everything she needs, I'm really starting to think her life wasn't so good where she was :(

I realize a lot of people buy pet brand items for their pets but I don't think they are the always the best choice. I would use Tom's of Maine natural toothpaste for her. They make it for toddlers and I would get a baby/toddler toothbrush too. I am a strong believer in natural products for people and animals because the chemical ones are causing too many health issues. I also like Dr. Bronner's Magic Pure Castile Classic Soap, especially the Baby Mild Liquid Soap, because it's great for sensitive skins and will keep the hair from drying out.

if you look on here you will find that many of us do not support any Hartz products as they are very cheap and bad quality products.

my advice for everything would be to quickly call and go see a vet. all new dog owners should make that their very first thing in getting a new dog. have her checked out, find out for sure if she is pregnant or not, and then go from there. for her teeth, ask the vet and if you need to brush get a high quailty product. i feed a raw diet and we never have to brush and according to my aunt who gave me the recipe, her mom used it on a dog that needed dental work badly and the raw diet cleaned up his teeth to where they didn't need any dental anymore. if you are interested PM me and i'll send the recipe to you. it's also a great recipe for good quality human grade food for a dog to eat

as far as the man issue, you may have to have men around her more that give her treats, like your son, husband, friends ext. make each man sit with her calmly for awhile and give her treats so she associates them with good things. that should help ease her fears a bit...

Bella refused to take any type of treat from him, sometimes she even refuses to look at him.

Welcome to YT! :) It was very kind of you to take this little one into your home after her previous owner passed away. How very sad and frightening for this little girl. :(

You have a multi-layered issues so I would like to break it down a little at a time.

First off, did you know that she can be spayed right now? It might be best for her health and well being if you considered this option. If the vet thinks she is older than 4 yrs it could be very dangerous for her to have a litter of puppies. In addition, you do not know if she has any health issues that she could possibly pass on to puppies. Or even if she would be able to have a litter without a c section.

Oral care in a Yorkie is a huge issue. It sounds to me that she needs a good dental cleaning and possibly tooth extractions to correct this problem. Brushing will unfortunately NOT fix this issue and it can actually become life threatening if left untreated. Mostly likely she has infection in her mouth that needs to be treated with an antibiotic. A dental can be done during a spay and the cost will then be minimal. I am not sure about the teeth *if* she is pregnant and you decided not to spay now. You might be able to get a better answer from a breeder on this portion of your question.

As for her being afraid of you husband, it will just take a lot of time and patience for her to accept him. What might help is if he sits on the ground at her level with the treats he is offering, while speaking in a comforting voice. He should never try to reach out for her to pet and but allow her to come to him. Let her "get acquainted" at her own pace and do not force the issue. She might have been treated poorly in her former home by a male. :(

Congrats on your new baby. I think it will just take time for her to get used to your husband. Let him sit on the floor and let him do the feeding time and take her outside, etc.
She will come around, she's new to the environment and if she's pregnant that adds to her stress a bit probably.

As a Breeder of 29 yrs & a CVT, I think you first need to address the health problems .
Not knowing her correct age and history, I would have her blood work done and have her spayed!!!!!! If you care about her and hope to have her settle in, this is the way to go. She has had a terrible life it seems and now a new home! When you get her spayed have her teeth done at the same time, She will feel much better. Right now there are NO puppies, just sperm and eggs, so don't feel bad:)
Once she recovers, I'm sure with time and love she will come around. Another way to get her to trust your husband is to have HIM feed her. Food is the way to their heart:)
Yorkies have the biggest Heart and will forgive and forget her past. She will be a great addition to your family given time.

Thank you guys for all your help and ideas! I really want her to feel happy here all the time, not just while the hubby is at work! lol She's following me around all day, but after he gets home... she keeps her space if we're on the same couch. If I move over to the love seat, however, she's right there. I'm also starting to think she's a Silkie Terrier, not that it matters, but she is longer than tall, she's 9lbs but not chubby at all, and her nose is kinda shorter and stubbier than alot of pics I've seen on here. BUT her hair is sssooooooo soft :luv: I could just cuddle with her for hours!

I will talk to the vet about having her spayed (one way or the other she def will be), but thats the problem, I do feel bad :fallen: no matter what choice I think about. 1) I'm going to send her in for an abortion and kill a litter of puppies ( I'm sorry but thats how I look at it ), plus put her at an extra risk having the spay done while shes preggo or 2) I'm going to bring another litter of mixed breed puppies into the world, not really knowing for sure what will happen to them once there're rehomed, plus put her at risk delivering.

I think you are in a good area to find rescue's and ask for information, too.
I wouldn't want to be in your position, I feel for you. But she's got a good mommy now and that's what makes it all the better :)
