Best sense: Hearing, smelling or seeing? My wife brought Eddie to my office this week. He didn't see me because he was too intent exploring the new environment. When I called him, he didn't seem to recognize my voice. But when I put my hand down in front of his nose, he went wild and jumped in my arms. So with Eddie, there's no doubt: His best sense is smell. |
I don't know which is Susan's best sense, but I'll bet it's NOT sight since her hair is in her eyes much of the time! |
senses The sense of smell is the most developed in a dog..that is the only sense they have at the beginning of life. Then they develop hearing and last sight. I was watching the Dog Whisperer and that is what he said. I had a litter of six who lost their mother at birth many year ago. I would tip toe into the room and sit by the box..within a few minutes the pups noses would start twitch, heads would pop up and they would start crying for "mother"...I was mother. Their eyes and ears were still sealed shut. I bottle fed all 6 until weaning time. My two girls could sit by the box and watch them sleep and they never woke.. |

Dennis can hear a anything a couple of houses away, like the mailman or another dog, even with all the noise going on. He is an excellent watch dog, even at 2 pounds 3 ounces! One night he woke me at 2 AM and I was trying to quiet him down so I could get back to sleep when 2 minutes later the door bell rang. I now trust he knows better than me and I investigate. Sue |
I know Millie's eye sight is not developed. She cannot see a toy, she is looking for, 2 inches in front of her. However, I have noticed her sniffing around eagerly when looking for her bone or chewies. She has found them that way too! |

Rika's is probably smell. When we take her digging spot she shoves her whole face into the dirt and you can hear her inhaling and then snorting all the dirt out of her nose. lol |
Teddy's best sense is Kissing! LOL...No, seriously I know when Ted is doing some serious smelling he also becomes deaf and blind to anything else so in his case it would be smell, hearing and then sight |
Definitely my dogs best sense is their smell. If i throw anything in the trash they are at the trash can investigating for something to snatch. |

I think Chewy's strength is his eye-sight. I can drop a treat by his foot and he smells all over the place and never finds it. When I point to it, no problem. I decided to test his eyes by taking him out to a field and playing "where is it" with his hedgehog. He can see his hedgehog from about 400 feet. He can't sniff it out if it's on the other side of a tree he's next to! I can turn around, and hide the toy under my shirt, and ask "Hey, Chewy! Where is it?" And he'll go running all over the place looking for it. If I ever get a video camera, I'll tape it because it's so funny. Instead of tracking a scent like most dogs, he has to go look in every hiding place he can think of. A lot of times he goes bipedal to check all the counters and book-shelves and such. |
