Age when puppy comes home? Okay I have been reading the posts and it seems to be a very sensitive subject about the age when someone brings a puppy home. I didnt know there was a big problem with bringing a puppy home at 8 weeks. The breeder we are getting the puppy from is going to let us pick the puppy up at 8 weeks if she is ready to go. She said she could tell then. If we do get her at that age are there certain things we would need to do? Is it something that is bad for health or more so for socialization? Does anyone feel it is okay for them to go home at 8 weeks? I just want our girl to be happy and healthy. Thanks ahead of time for info and please dont beat me up for asking. I know people can feel strongly about this. |
I can not think of any good reason why and exception should ever be made allowing a dog to come home at only 8 weeks. They are kept longer for both socialization AND health reasons. I would seriously question the ethics of any breeder that was willing to release a pup that young. |
Honestly some don't even have their teeth yet at 8 weeks. Some have problems learning to eat, some are too scared to eat at a new home. Hypoglycemia is a big problem when they are younger. If you don't know what to look for, or what to do, they could die.. or the very least have an expensive Vet trip. I let Mom wean, so some don't wean until 10 weeks or so, and they stay with Mom until they are 12 weeks and going to their new home. Then there's Vaccinations. Your baby will not be protected at that age. Socialization is important with their mom and siblings, but there are many other factors too. I would question this breeder as well. |
Hi I think it is so great your asking questions! If I were you I would ask the breeder if she would mind holding onto puppy untill 12 weeks. I know it's hard to wait, but it's worth it. At eight weeks they still need there mamma and litter mates. A twelve week old puppy is so much closer to being ready to take on the role of a pup in the human pack. I really think you will have a better adjustment period, for you and puppy, at 12 weeks. Keep us posted! :aimeeyork |
