I'm not sure if it's common, but it can be prevented. Don't try to mask the problem, but get to the root of it. On an older dog, it can be a sign of tartar buildup and inflamed gum pockets, you need to have a cleaning and do more daily to prevent tartar. I believe that tooth brushing as well as chewing sticks and Petzlife tooth gel all help. On a dog under 1 year old tartar isn't the problem, it's more likely loose teeth and that bloody/bacteria smell from food getting into tooth pockets. Also, some younger dogs get a double row of teeth because Yorkies don't lose all their baby teeth on their own, and food can build up between the rows and cause a foul smell. This is best addressed by having extra teeth pulled when spayed or neutered. Occasionally, a bad smell is produced because food isn't being digested property, but usually it's the teeth that need attention. |
