I'm only guessing ....but with the internet & WAY too many people jumping on the band wagon to sell puppies, (I won't say breeding because it's an insult to those who really care) ....the yorkie population has exploded and with that - so have health issues and problems.

When a dog gets popular - everyone and their uncle want to cash in.

I feel sorry for the people who breed for the love of the dog - they must feel ill reading and seeing all the health issues so many are experiencing (I know I do) ...even worse - dogs are suffering all because someone wanted to make a quick buck.

I agree Vee and when you have people breeding who don't have a clue you will end up with many, many sick Yorkies. Some of these people don't have a clue about genetic defects and how it is passed on to the next generation..:(

I think so too. Reason it is so important to test the parents and pups!!! I would rather be safe than sorry. Also when you go to pet food stores, parks where dogs go, vet offices, etc... Always best to take off your shoes before coming into your house and bringing something into your home and allowing your dogs at home to get it. I then bleach my shoes and my car mats to kill any germs. Even when I take my dogs to the vet for regular visits I always bring a pee pad or blanket to be the barrier between them and the examining table. I then have the vet techs throw away the pee pad for me as I leave the room, or I can wash the blanket when I get home right away. If I use a blanket, I make sure it never touches my dog once we leave. I use a baggie and place it in there till I get to the washer and throw the baggie away. Yes, they have their vaccines, but it can happen that they can pick up something. I would rather be super safe.

I just want to add: There are so many people lately wanting to breed their dog or get a puppy to be breed - I know since I have had the calls and so many emails by others wanting. They have no clue what they are getting into. They have not done their research and are just jumping into it. Not a profession way to go about it nor the correct way.

I think also that there are other sick dogs breeds also but you are here on Yorkie Talk and we talk about strictly yorkies. I bet if you go to any other breed forum you will find that there are other breeds that are sick and in need of advice on their particular breed.
I also agree with the other posters that there are people breeding who don't have a clue

Yes Cindy - when I say correct and professional way - it is meant the humane way. Ones dog should be their number one priority at all times, since you are their Only advocate. That includes all pups you bring into this world as well! With that comes a lot of responsibility!

I think that another reason is because of their size. I have always been around dogs that weighed about 35-40 pounds or so. A 40 pounder can eat things that would be harmful to a 6 pounder. Just think, my baby is 8 pounds, and my human baby was 7 lbs., 11 ozs. at birth.:eek: I would not let my newborn sniff the ground or pick something up off the ground and put it in her mounth.:D But these little guys are forever the size of a newborn, or smaller. Their little bodies just can't handle what a larger dog can take. Well, that is my theory.:animal-pa
