My dog ate a cat hairball - this size of a yorkie dookie! I have a 7 mo baby girl, who just inhaled a cat hairball about this long xxxxxxxxxx (10 characters or an inch). About the size of one of her poop pieces. IF the cat spits them up 'cause they don't want it in them -- yikes? Will it block my yorkie or clog her up? I recall the vet telling me once they can get blockages w/little twigs/leaves/grass.... She sucked it up so fast i have no idea if it was all hair or hair/pluscat food mixed. Anyone have this happen to them? Will it get digested or passed at 7 months 5 lbs? |
I'm definitely not an expert with hairballs, but I have a yorkie who will eat absolutely anything. Needless to say, I've made plenty of calls to the emergency vet and posted plenty of forums wondering if whatever Miles has swallowed would cause a blockage! I would keep a close eye on her and make sure she is eating and pooping normally. Also watch out for vomiting. I'm 99.9% sure she'll be just fine (based on past experience of Miles swallowing random stuff). If anything out-of-the-ordinary happens, call the vet. But don't worry yourself too much. :) |
I wouldn't worry too much...like the previous poster said, just keep an eye on your pup. Stella is about the same age/size and I catch her eating lint balls that roll from under the couch or the dryer..or whatever (who knows where!) all the time, so I'm sure for every one I catch her eating she gets to swallow a couple (she LOVES to chase and eat fuzzballs!), and we've never had a problem. Just be vigilant :) |
We prodcued a decent poopy -- Crisis averted! Hello and thank you so much for your replies! So the Boo made a poo. Not the largest deposit but a healthy run-of-the-mill just right gushy one. Not too hard and not too soft. I wanted to reply earlier when the blessed event occurred, however internet was down. Isn't it amazing how we have to inspect poop all the time? When i got Boo, a friend said something I'll never forget. She said "The good news is their poo-poos are cute. The bad news is their poo-poos are cute"... meaning she didn't get too upset about poo-poo in the house. I can't beelive the things she is willing to try to eat! Not long ago she ate a cat poop w/tabasco sauce on it and didn't miss a beat. I watched her lap up sand on a beach REPEATEDLY the way she laps up water when she is thirsty. What on earth goes thru their little pea-sized brains? We KNOW she is smart. She is so smart but so dumb xxoo we just laff and worry simultaneously |
Funny post - mine seem to have a definite taste for earth, grass, whatever happens to be on the floor, bird seeds, peanuts the bird will drop or whatever else comes their way. :D |

Burton eats my hair all the time (I shed like a golden retriever!). It's never a problem going in, but coming out he needs some help. So gross. I'm sure she will be fine, just keep on eye on her. Also I wouldn't worry about the cat food my dog when I was a kid ate cat food for years. The vet recommended it (it was a looooong time ago) and she lived a happy and long life. |
Poop w/hot sauce? Well - funny you should ask but we had a challenge we even posted here that all agreed - was a challenge. The oldest (18 yrs) arthritic cat cannot use litter box w/lid, need big wide box, cannot get over even a small gate etc. so we needed to keep puppy out but allow kitty in. And wanted to discourage puppy from eating "recycled" cat food (loosely translated = cat poop). We read here and many other places, if you sprinkle a bit of hot sauce on a cat-poopoo that will stop it or at least discourage. NOT. Leave it to my little monkey to like hot sauce. I dribbled accidentally a few drops and she lapped them up happily. Even hours later tried to lick carpet where the hot-sauce dried drops were. Then again - I have the only puppy I know of who hates peanut butter? But...heellllooo??? wants to eat sand. Go figure. Thankfully she stopped the poop ventures on her own. I am guessing the sloppy seconds (ha I crack myself up) of cat food weren't as appealing as the real deal. Quote:

Isn't it funny how our yorkie babies won't eat the best and most expensive dog food and goes nuts for the gourmet treats like cat poo, dried mud from husbands work boot, twist ties, fuzz, paper, leaves, Q-tips and don't forget the toilet paper. I find myself several times a day prying open her mouth to see what new tasty tid bit she has found. |
