Dry dog food storage / containers Right now I buy the 7 pound bag of Iams toy dry dog food. The bigger bag is actually the best buy but I am afraid it will go stale. Who uses what for containers ? I read it was not a good idea to keep it in plastic containers. Has any one else heard that.? Right now I just open the dog food and then role up the top over it and put a " very big clip "over the bag. |
All I know for sure is that it should be in a dry, air tight container. I have never heard that plastic should not be used. I will be interested in other opinions on this one. |
I buy the large bag and then divide it into Ziploc storage bags that last me about a week. I store it in my doggy cabinet in my kitchen. |
i buy the big bag also, it comes in a ziplock bag and if not i save the big ziploc bag and convert the food into that. .then i put that bag in a big storage container and seal that too and keep it in my pantry.. so far so good |
The reason some people say that plastic should not be used is that the oil from the dog food leaches out and can gets on the plastic. The oil will go rancid after a period of time, and if the plastic isn't thoroughly cleaned, can cause new food to go bad. Glass and ceramics are just easier to clean. It's the moisture in air that causes most food to go "stale", and many say using the bag the food came in, and squeezing out the air and clipping it is the best way to store it, I do this and keep a weeks worth of food in a plastic container that goes into the dishwasher. So you are looking at two separate issues, staleness and oil rancidity, |
Didn't know that about the oil.... thanks for sharing. |
Solid gold recommends that you leave the kibble in the original bag for storage. Once it's open you can place the bag inside of a container, if you want to. I also keep Blue Buff in its original bag, inside a container. |
Very interesting. I also use a large air tight plastic container for his 5# bag of food. It's already 5yrs old and looks the same. I also use air tight plastic containers for his treats. Never had a problem. A glass container would weigh lot's with 5#'s of food in it! |
I always buy the larger bag (b/c I am the budget queen!) and roll down the top and make sure its closed with a big clip as well. I have never had a problem with it going stale. |
I know both Wellness Core and Orijen come in bags you can reseal. Love it! |
Janie, I found the neatest container for dogfood at a place in Cincinnati called Jungle Jims. It was in the pet section........ it is sealed with a rubber seal and has a nice large opening at the top so we can also store our measuring cup in there, too! It is not real tall therefore it is not top heavy...... We love it!!! |
