Thin Hair My Lil Toot has beautiful looking hair it lays down straight and is beautiful color BUT it is so thin, thin enough you can see his skin. Does anyone know anything I can do to thicken his coat? |
There can be medical reasons for thin or thinning hair. Have you had him checked by your vet? |
Yes I mentioned it to the vet and his reply was some dogs are born that way. Wish I could take him to another one but we live in rural community and the nearest vet is 20 miles and the next is over 60 mi. He is healthy in every other way and my other two yorkies have the same diet. We use Chris Christensen shampoo for their hair. |
Has he had any bloodwork done recently? Like maybe a thyroid test ? How old is he? |
He is 1 yr & 10 months and is a little over 3lbs. No the vet told me he was healthy and didn't need blood work. |
Has he always had thin hair? Can you post a photo of him? What are you feeding him and are you giving any supplements? |
2 Attachment(s) His diet is Iams, only one I have found to not make him itch. When he was born he didn't look like a yorkie he had so much hair he was a ball of fur and it was soft texture. He got his first haircut at 5 months and they shaved him short (I was furious) when his hair grew back in it was thin and course. As he gets older it is getting thinner and if he gets something stuck in it I have to be very careful getting it out or it will pull out a big clump. Here is a picture when he was younger before his first haircut the second one is a few months ago. His hair is longer now it grows long just thin. I would take a picture tonight but he is asleep and is a grouch if woken up, I will post a current one tommorrow and try to get a close up of his part down his back which shows how thin it is. I appreciate your help. |
This link may give you more info: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...rt-thread.html One excerpt stated: A puppy whose coat appears sparse or thin will, as an adult, have a thick, long coat of the correct fine silky, glossy texture. This coat’s growth is like a human’s hair, in that it is born with very little but by adulthood has an abundance of hair, the quantity having doubled and redoubled all during puppyhood (or childhood). Both colors will be totally clear. Also, Yorkies coats are similar to human hair in that they do not shed, but hair will come out in the comb or brush when you groom him, which is shed hair it just doesn't fall out on it's own. Do you groom him at home? Maybe a volumizing shampoo would give him a thicker look, and in one thread i read where someone recommended Omega 3 supplements for their coat. I trim mine, not short but actually just the tips, and his coat appears thicker and is growing fast. Depending on how his hair lays, I can see his skin, but not after I comb through and straighten everything up. Damage to the skin and hair from scratching can also cause changes, but should return to normal in time. I couldn't really see a problem in the photos, I'll look again tomorrow. He's a cute little guy! I see you have other Yorkies. Are their coats thick, which would make his look thin by comparison? Also, I use alot of conditioner on mine which can make the hair lay really flat against the skin and I see more skin through his coat when this happens. I was told also that a Yorkie doesn't come into full coat until they are 5-7 years old. Can't think of anything else right now, so I'm off to bed! See you tomorrow! |
