Birthing Puppies My female just birthed her second litter today. Her first litter was 3 puppies, with one stillborn. This litter was five puppies with one stillborn. Is it normal for her to have so many? And to have a stillborn each time? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new litter. The number of puppies in a litter can greatly vary from litter to litter but the number of pups your momma had sounds about normal. Usually, from my experience, the first litter is usually a little smaller than the following litters. As for having a still born, that really just depends on how hard a time the momma is having delivering the puppies. A large puppy or prolonged labor will increase the chances of a stillborn. How big is the momma? Yorkie Talk also has a great breeders section where most people post questions pertaining to breeding. |
Mommy is about 4 pounds (when not pregnant) and daddy is about 4 pounds. I knew she was much bigger this time than last, but I didn't expect her to have so many puppies. |

Thanks for the help and reassurance. It has been about 4 hours since the birth of the last pup and Mommy and 4 living babies are doing well. |
Congratulations on your litter and sorry for your loss, I really did not know how many people breed girls under 5 pounds.. My son kept telling me how risky it would be for my Prada and she was 5.5 pounds so I had her spayed,at 6 months thinking she was going to stay that weight... she is now a wooping 6.5 pounds, which for me is not that much more...LOL Now I am breeding my silky girl she weights 8.9 pounds and I am still nervous..:) best of luck with mom and babies... post pictures in the nursery when you can so we can meet your babies.. hugs, CArmen in nj |
