my baby has learned to jump on the couch Help! My Bailey has learned how to jump up on the couch, however he has not learned how to jump off. He jumped of yesterday and bumped his head. So my delima is. Do I scold him to not let him jump on the couch. What to do? |
Good Luck with that......Lol! My Bryan learned to jump on the couch last year and has been doing it ever since....sometimes when he's trying to jump up he will fall back but he get back up and tries again.....they are very determined little dogs...Good Luck! |
This is a tough one. My Bijou's recovering from a broken leg from falling off the couch. I've always let the little ones on the couch, but for her it won't be until she's much bigger. It's really a judgement call on your part. Ask yourself...do you want him on your couch or not. Then you'll react accordingly. |
We use ramps by the beds and trained them to use them from day one and by the couch we have foot stools that they use to get up and down off. It is too easy for them to get hurt otherwise. |
Thor's always been fine getting off the couch, but he needs his extra fluffy doggy bed (courtesy of jencar98) to get on, unless he puts everything he's got into the jump up. I think it's your call, I would just recommend deciding on one or the other and sticking with it. He'll get confused if you are wishy washy about if it's okay or not. I guess I'd also take into account how sturdy you think he is, and if he is jumping on to a rug. Thor is only 4 lbs, but he seems pretty resilient. |
Timba has learned how to jump on and off the bed and the sofa 3 yrs ago and has been doing it ever since.... I get a kick out of it sometimes... but then sometimes I get scared he might fall and break his little legs... |

Derby is just getting at that age now where he's growing and not really realising his size. He gets so excited that he's now fallen off the couch twice in the past week! He has his little step area to get on and off, but it's so sad to see him fall off :( One of these days he'll learn! He's a grown significantly this week. 3 Month mark happened on the 22nd... |
Sophie jumps on the couch, too. Yes, they are fragile, and you do have to watch them. She has learned how to get down without putting too much stress on herself, so we let her do it but we watch her. She's pretty tough, but I know she can still hurt herself. She will get to the highest point on the couch, but she'll use the different levels of the couch to get down, so it's like steps. |
I'm not sure what you should do, it just made me remember back to when Callie was a puppy and to small to jump on the couch so she would get a running start jump as high as she could and then climb the rest of the way up it was so cute and funny although the couch eventualy had to be replaced after she was big enough to jump up there completly with out climbing! I used to curl up under a blanket and be on my laptop so i loved her curled up with me on my legs. Our couch is pressed up against a wall and he favorite spot is to jump on the back of the couch and sleep. |
Jada loves to be on the couch. She is too short to jump high enough to get up there by herself though. We we using big pillows for her to get up by herself. We got steps about a month ago so she likes using them now. We still have to watch her if she gets too excited she'll try to jump down, especially if she hears a noise outside or the doorbell rings. It doesn't look good but we keep pillows in the floor in front of the couch and love seat.It just isn't worth the risk of her falling and getting hurt. |
I, actually, have pillows (regular bedtime queen and king sleep pillows w/slips on them) completely around the couch, chair and ottomon...Apple weighs 4 1/2 lbs. and I'm not taking any chances w/her jumping off and hurting her legs...My best friend, who is soooooooooooo better homes and gardens, just hates the pillows around the couch, so I told her how fortunate she was not to have to put them around her own couch lol.... |
