question about yorkie coat Hi, I recently got a new little yorkie- she is 9 weeks old. I love the look and feel of her coat right now, it is about 1 and a half inches long, its soft and sticks straight up. I prefer this look to the look that yorkies usually have when they are adults (long, fine, silky) If I kept my yorkie groomed/shaved, would it still look like when she was a pup? Thanks! |
I don't think shaving would get you the puppy look. Probably trimming with scissors. Bring a picture and stay there and watch if you are allowed. I read a lot of post here that owners are not happy when they get to the groomers to pick up their babies. |
You won't know if your baby has a silky coat until his permanent coat comes in. Right now he has his puppy coat which is always very soft. I'd wait until he's at least a year old before deciding on cutting it or not. Also, if a groomer won't let you stay and watch, then find one that will. Too many horror stories about groomers. You may want to groom him yourself. |
that puppy fluff coat won't usually last. a standard yorkie coat is silky and lies very flat. if cut short, they often look like small cairn terriers, but usually only retain that ruffly puppy look if their adult coat comes in cottony (which is considered a flaw in the showring, but some people like it) and you keep it cut about that length. I think as you grow with your pup you will discover you like a great many things, even as they change, so....be patient...you may find you like the longer coat on your dog. |
4 Attachment(s) Yorkiedaze and Redvalaria have a point, your baby is so young you don't know what kind of coat she will have, and the baby fluff won't last forever. If your baby is just a pet, then it won't really matter what kind of coat she has! I've seen silky ones that are just gorgeous with their long flowy hair. But lucky for me that's not the case. I have a "flawed" yorkie who has a cottony coat. It is slightly curly on his body but it is oh so very soft. I love to brush him every night and just bury my face in his coat! He feels and looks like a brand new teddy bear! Here are 2 pics of him before his haircut: Attachment 293357 Attachment 293358 and two after: Attachment 293359 Attachment 293360 Sorry, I'm just a proud new mom that gave her boy an at home haircut, with the help of my lovely roommate of course. I just couldn't resist posting pics! |
Dvlsh: what a doll he is! I only use "flaw" to mean it deviates from the breed standard. None of these little guys is flawed, unless you count that they have an ability to worm their way into your heart so fast! I have a 19 pound "flawed" teapot who I couldn't love more.... |
