Health Guarantee's from breeders Hello all, I am starting to do research on buying a Yorkie pup. I grew up with Yorkies, and I now am ready for one of my own. I'm VERY aware of the health problems that can happen to yorkies, geesh the vet bills my parents had just for the teeth were outrageous! No wonder It took so long to get new toys- ha ha! I live in the DC area, and I'm trying to find someone locally (in case anyone has some good breeder info). Anyway, I was wondering, what should I be on the look out for when the breeder is going to guarantee the dog's health? I've seen 1 year guarantee's and then lifetime, I've also seen genetic or other unknown (to me) medical stuff. Under those though, what should I be entitled too, or is that soley up to the breeder? I am looking for a regualr pet, not for showing, not for breeding. Just a loving pet. Thanks! |
i took a little "chance" with mine when i got him (well, i guess he chose me .... :p) i was given 3 days to get him checked out in which time i needed to take toby to my vet and get a health OK, if he did nto pass he would have refunded the money or given me another puppy..... as far as genetic problems .... he said his dogs havent shown any signs of any problems in their geneology but if toby did exhibit any genetic problems then call him (the breeder) and we would work something out........ the breeder i got toby from was a really all around nice guy, but you always have to be carefull there are many cheats out there  |
Thank you for the info. I am planning on writing the local Yorkie club here to try and get hopefully a good breeder referal... I can't wait to get my little one. :) |
I got a 24 hour guarantee with Oscar, but I know if anything ever came up, my breeder would make it right for us. You just have to get to know your breeder. If they are close by, ask to go over and see the setup. Ask to see the parents of your prospective pup. Also if there are any siblings from a past litter, ask to see them. If your breeder won't oblige you of these things - RED FLAG...they might just have something to hide. The breeder we got Oscar from invited us into her home and we spent a lot of time with her dogs and were very impressed with her operation. The day before, I had spoken with another breeder who would not let me come to see the parents, but wanted to do business with me at the local flea market...needless to say, we did not go that route. Best of luck with your baby to be...you will never regret your Yorkie, but if not done right, you might just regret the experience! |
if you call around on the list they give you .... ask for a "pet quality" pup... these are the yorkies that will be larger (or smaller) than the standard and cannot be shown..... they might also have a slightly different coat texture... blah blah blah..... a yorkie is a yorkie to me :p these pups usually are sold for less money....... i got toby for $500 (the breeder originally had a price tag on him for $600, but i impressed him with my wealth of yorkie knowledge so i got him for cheaper)........lol...... i didnt tell the breeder that i learned everything from watching peoples posts!! anyways, these guys are expensive and patience is key to getting a good and healthy pup (for the best price of course)...... who ever said "cant buy me love????"... i think they are wrong :p |
My daughter is in the process of getting a new Baby that I will be buying . We have spoken to the breeder many times . After the pups were born he told us to visit anytime. We went last week and saw the Mom , Dad,Pups ,Sisters ,brothers and Aunts. All Healthy and active yorkies. he said He has a 3 moth guarantee on the pups and if anything went wrong he would work thinga out. Guess you need to be comfortable with the beeder . Check out where they are being raised . The Pups from this breeder are raised in a home envirorment. good luck with the search Fran |
I didn;t sign any contract with my breeder since i bought Mojo overseas, but i have to say, i couldn;t ask for more. She helps me in everyway, and even the vet from her kennel helps me with my doubts. I would say, go for a contract and also a breeder that show interest and knowing you and how you will treat your yorkie, that is helpful with any doubts and doesn;t care answering questions about the dog and the breed. |
We not only signed a contract ... we had several "verbal" agreements! I have made it a practice [my family will confirm this], if I ever make a promise, I will keep it or "die trying"! So, we have lived up to each and every committment we made and so has our breeder! Even with her busy schedule with all her babies and her show babies, she always wants "reports" and updates on Toto! We discuss the really "important" things for Toto, before we do it. She was as excited as we were to have the opportunity a few weeks ago to take Toto to the new facility in Denver and have her "run through the mill" with all the tests and X-rays! When I called her to report that, with the exception of her weight, she was pronounced "perfect", I thought she was going to cry she was so happy!! Now, in my opinion, that's a good breeder!! ;) |
Hi..I am a member of the regional Yorkie club in your area...I will be happy to refer you to a number of breeders near you..send me a PM.. |
I think that if someone tries to waive too much liability, I'd be a little concerned. I would trust someone who says that if anything bad happens, they will take full or partial responsibility. I'd also be careful of the types of payment that they are willing to take...if they say cash only or money order, I'd be cautious. READ THE CONTRACT and be sure you agree to everything in there. If you have any questions or concerns, ask and get it clarified before hand. Make sure there is one in writing. Make sure you get as much as a full history of your yorkie as you can so that in the future, if you want to track family history down, you can do that. Something that tells you what vet visits the yorkie had, and the results of it is a good sign. Also, find out your state's law on the issue and make sure that the breeder is complying with it. For example, in NY, when you get a dog, you have to get a license and take him to the vet within 14 days. The people that we got Archie from got a contract saying that we understand that and will do it. Also, make sure the breeder will give you money back if things don't work out. If you have the money or know someone who is a lawyer, contact a local lawyer and ask them to draw up a contract for you or to look over the contract the breeder gives you. And be careful of non-refundable deposits. I'm not giving you legal advice...these are just the things that I looked for in the contract when I got Archie. And don't forget receipts for everything! |
