extra toes on new pup Hi I am the proud dad of a new furkid! Nicky, (formally DINO), he will be 5 months old in October and weighs a whopping 5.4 lbs already! Guess who will be eating less and playing more! He just came back from his vet for his rabies shot and the vet told us he has an extra toe on his hind legs. She told us that this is not uncommon for yorkies. Has anyone else seen this? I don't care, we think he is adorable, but just curious. |
Is she refering to his dew claw? This is located slightly up the leg from the paw. Or does he actually have 5 toes on his paw? |
Normally, dew claws are only found on front legs - they're normally "docked" at the same time the tail is. There are some who will decry the practice as barbaric, but the presence of dew claws can cause a lot of pain and discomfort when they get snagged - and they WILL. Sometimes a dog will have dew claws on the hind legs, too. It doesn't happen often, but it can occur. I know some cats have extra toes: their feet look like they have boxing gloves on :D. There is a whole colony of them in Key West; they're decendents of Ernest Hemingway's cat. The technical name is "polydactyl" ... a cuter name is "mitten foot". |
