My rescued Lillie I have not been able to come on to this site for some time due to computer problems and husband in hospital. I would like to ask if anyone can advise me if vets can find out what gives Lilly very bad sores on her underneath just by taking a blood sample. The vet told me that they would be able to tell just what she is allergic to by testing her blood so I had it done at a cost of £268 and am waiting to hear from them. I have been told that if people have problems they have to have skin tests not a blood test so am now wondering if I have been mislead over the blood test and I have put Lilly through pain for nothing. |
Well that sounds a little odd to me, but I don't know for sure one way or the other. I'll bump this up and maybe someone will see it later tonight and be able to give some input. |
sorry to say I dont know about allergy test for dogs, but I can tell you my son was having horrible asthma attacks and he was very little 2 yrs or so and the allergist did blood test to determine what he was allergic to instead of the skin test....the blood test was very specific showing he was allergic to milk, wheat, corn and Oak trees....so would think if they can do it for kids, probably can do it for doggy's as well. |
they take blood and send it off to a lab to be tested for specific allergies most likely antech it should be back faxed results to the vet office within a few days |
I'm a lab tech for humans and they can do allergy tests on human blood so I don't see why they wouldnt be able to do it on animals. Having allergies means that you have anitbodies in your body that attack the antigens (things in dander, pollen, food, ect...). Not everyone has these antibodies in their system this is why some people are allergic to say dogs and some arent. The way they do the blood test is introducing these antigens into the patients blood and look for a reaction, if there is a reaction then you're allergic to it. My rescued Lilly Thank you all so much I feel a lot better knowing that they will be able to find out from the blood tests, and I did not put her through pain for nothing. I hated leaving her because she is still very frightened that she will be dumped again. She follows us everywhere and has settled better that we ever thought. When she came home from the vets she had 5 needle holes in her shaved neck so I guess the poor little thing had a rough time. Thanks again Jacky |
Yes, then can test for allergies through blood. My daughters golden retriever has allergies. The test (here) is not cheap but, worth it to find out what he is allergic to. She changed his food to Wellness brand and he hasn't had a problem since. |
They did a complete blood test for my little girl to determine if she had allergies. They send it off and as the other poster stated, it took several days. Best of luck with you little one, poor little thing. |
I wonder if maybe a blood test will be more accurate than the skin test. Good luck and hope whatever is causing problems is easily solved. |
