Pediatric Neuter??? Has any one ever heard of a pediatric neuter? A lady that took two brothers from the same litter as our little guy got them pediatric neutered yesterday. (I don't know her personally, she is a friend of a friend) They are only 9 weeks old. I have never heard of this before. I just don't see how this works. It just doesn't seem right.:thumbdown |
I wouldnt get it done that early Ive read it can hurt their growth and other things |
Many, many shelters started doing this in 1993 because over 50% of people adopting young puppies and kittens never had them spayed/neutered as promised. With millions of animals being euthanized every year early spay/neuter has proven to lower animals being euthanized. "Skeletal growth is controlled by the hormones of puberty. Prepubertally sterilized animals have a slowing in the closure of their growth plates. The result is slightly more growth of the long bones. There is not scientific data indicating this represents a problem. We do have years of anecdotal evidence that these prepube animals are leaner, lankier, and live longer healthier lives. What little issues have been found is in large breed dogs. " There are some breeders that will not release their puppies until this has been done because they have been burned by people not fixing their dogs as they said they would and these breeders want to protect their lines. Since your puppy is not from a shelter and hopefully you are a strong believer in nuetering your little one I would wait until he gets a little older. |
Thanks for the info Cindy! :) Yes, I planned on getting Reesie neutered, but not this early. The vet said about 6 months, does that sound about right? Will he have gone through puberty by then, and if so, what should I expect from him? Will he be making up my house? Thanks again!:D |
What I like is when they go in that you have any baby teeth pulled at the same time you are doing the neuter so the dogs do not have to go under twice. I like for the little ones to be over 3# for the most part but 6 months is a good time but it does not guarantee they will not mark. Sorry I wish it were true but for the most part it does seem to help many..:) |
Thank You!:D |
My Spike was neutered around 5 weeks, he had a hernia and they fixed him while they had him open. I guess that doesn't really count since they didn't go in to specificaly neuter him but he's nice and healthy now and we never had to deal with him humping anything which was nice. I gues this wanst much help but oh well :D |
Benefit of pediatric spaying.. Amazing the things I learn. I wouldn't consider this on my yorkies due to their already dimunuitive size. However, I did have this done on my cats. I know that shelters do it because then there is no issue with the new owners 'dropping the ball'. My cats were foundlings and I had read up on the subject and believed that it was less traumatic and healing was quicker the younger they were, kind of like circumsion on baby boys. I fought to find a vet to do pediatric neuters when they were 8wks old. It went beautifully. Your post on the long bones would explain the phenomenon with Buster, especially. Both of our cats are beautiful. He however, is extraordinary. He is lean, lanky and looooong. Almost 15lbs, 100% muscle. A black and white tuxedo cat. He can stand on the floor and put his paws directly onto the top of the kitchen counter. Now we have an idea where this amazing length may have come from. YT as a forum just rocks! |
