Road to Recovery Hi All:) i have a 6 year old Yorkie that I adopted from someone at my job. He no longer wanted Max since his wife and him have a 4 & 1 year old. So he is now part of our family!!! He gave us everything he had for Maxwell which was great since he was already used to it. Maxwell is house broken for the most part. And we adore him and we are so glad he is now in our family. My daughter who is 14 has been asking me for a dog and we finally have him with us! Maxwell is an affectionate, stubborn, feisty, and tough Yorkie. The food he gave us was Nature Recipe. However, Maxwell has been itching alot so I thought it was probably best to change his food after the bag ran out. UMMM yeah- bad idea. I did research and bought EVO chicken small bites. I thought this would be best! BUt I didn't do enough research cause I just changed his food straightaway not gradual. Of course this caused him to have diarreah and vomiting & not wanting to touch food at all or drink any water! Since this is my first dog -ever-I was so scared and mad at myself cause I caused him so much misery. Well yesterday, I rose early to give him boiled chicken with rice and yes, he finally ate it around 2pm. He is back to his old fiesty self- im so happy cause I was soooo worried. He started eating again on Tue- just chicken and rice. He ate twice yesterday. However, can seasoned Yorkie owners help me answer a few questions. All advice is great!! 1. How long should I continue to feed him chicken and rice? I had a little left over so I fed it to him for breakfast today. 2. Should I go back to Nature Recipe or EVO? Which one should I give him? I really want him to eat the EVO cause I dont like seeing him itch. 3. Will he even go back to eating dog food since he has had a taste of adult food? 4. How should I transition him back to eating his own food? 5. He no longer has diarreha but his stools are soft- is this typical of boiled rice and chicken? It was like an orangy color. thanks all!! oh gosh. and the gas is bad since hes been eating chicken and rice LOL |
I would go back to the original food and gradually add a little at a time of the new food. Do this for about a week - 10 days, adding a little more each day. Your baby should be fine. Hope it helps his itching. Good luck and Welcome! to YT. :D |
the original food meaning Natures recipe or the bland diet. can i incorporate chicken and rice with EVO as a gradual weaning?    |
Hi goodluck with your baby,i was born and raised in dc then i moved to md and now i am in nc lol |

I know EVO Small bites is a quality food, but it is 43% protein, which is pretty high. I wonder if that was just too much for your new guy. I might look around and select a different high quality food with just a little less protein content. I usually try to stay in the 30's% -- for instance, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stage is 34% protein. Just an opinion and you will find lots of different philosophies on dog food! :) CONGRATULATIONS on your new family member and WELCOME to YT! :welcome4: |
@exotic yorkies... hi. I like this area alot. NC is a nice state too. @fid...thanks. I cooked the rice and chicken. I put a little evo in and it stuck to the rice. of course, he ate all the chicken out. it is as if he doesnt want to touch the EVO now- even though he gobbled it up the first day. and im thinking that the rice is making him itch again. well at least he is eating now. when should I expect hard stools again? thanks everyone :D |
