Suggestion and thoughts please Hi there, I am a new pet owner and lucky enough to have gotten a 4lb Yorkie (3 years old). I need to leave the state for 3 weeks for a job training and I recently moved to a new area. I have a friend who state she would be willing to take my little girl in for the 3 weeks. However, she has 2 cats and her boyfriend has a pit bull puppy who he frequently brings to her residence. I don't know too much about pets, dogs or cats, and I am concerned if my little girl will be okay with them. I am more afraid that the cats may attack her or even the puppy pit bull. My girl is only 4lbs and as you know the smaller they are, the more fragile. Do you think this is a safe environment for her? Any thoughts or suggestions? I think I may just be overprotective, but I wanted to know what other yorkie owners think. |
My little Rowdy is 4 lbs. too. My daughter has a 12 lb cat and Rowdy and the cat get along famously. Of course, not at first. The cat had to hiss and moan for a while - but eventually (a few hours) the cat and Rowdy became best of friends and now they play like best buds. The cat is only a year and a half old though - I don't know how it might be with older cats. I might be more concerned with the pit bull puppy - I had a Jack Russell puppy a few years ago and at 3 months old that pup would pounce on ANY other dog, big or little. If the pup is a problem though, it would seem that you could ask your friend to ask her boyfriend to refrain from bringing the pup over for 3 weeks. That's not that long. |
It would scare me. You have to go with your gut instinct. |
I just wanted to add that I have a cat, Alley, who is 8 lbs. at 12 years old. Sunshine, my Yorkie, is 3 lbs. Sunshine tries to play with Alley but Alley just looks at Sunshine as if to say, "Get lost. You don't scare me." Occasionally, Alley will swat Sunshine when she tries to play. I know if Alley wanted to she could kill Sunshine. She is a gentle cat. I don't leave them alone together. |
Assuming the pit bull is nice, it is still so much larger than your baby. I would asked for my yorkie to be crated when the pit bull was around just to prevent any possible catastophy's. I wouldn't worry to much about the cats. My cats either play or ignore Lily. I would be suprised to see one fight her on purpose. |
Hi Marilyn...I believe that a lot weighs on how much you trust your friend? You are the only one that knows how she lives as well as her sense of responsibility. It can be wonderful to have an involved aunt. If your little one knows her well it is something I would give serious consideration to because your baby would probably feel safer than to be left in the hands of strangers that you don't know at all. Good Luck to you and I hope you find something that works out for you as I do understand your concern because I am the same way with Ted. |

I agree with the above and would add that perhaps you can schedule a day where you can bring your yorkie to your friends apartment with all the animals in attendence and see how everyone gets along. (a trial run, if you will). That may speak volumes and make your decision for you. |
I too would talk to your friend and make sure she understands how fragile these little ones can be, as long as there is enough care and supervision it should be alright. The only one I would be really worried about is the pit bull, most cats even if they decide they don't want to be friends won't do much more than hiss and ignore the little dog. What I am really interested in is how you two are getting along. I too have the opportunity to get a little 2 1/2 yr. old female (champion, spayed, everything) and I am wondering how well she will take to a new home. Does your little one seem to be bonding well with you? I'm going to meet my little one on Saturday, can't wait! I would love to hear any advice or info you can give me. :) |
Try taking your baby over to the house and introducing her to the cats and the puppy. Try it a couple of times a week to get them all use to each other and see if it will work out. If not maybe someone on YT that lives close to you would be willing to doggy sit for you. |
