Are your's aggressive toward leash??? We've been working with Reesie on the leash this week, and I'm not sure how well it is working. He is 9 weeks old and does not like his leash. He is okay as long as I let him go where he wants, as soon as I put any pressure to go a different direction he hunches down and will not budge. If I can get him in motion it is okay for several steps, but then he starts grabbing the leash in his mouth and growling and snarling at it like he hates it, and starts to play tug of war with me. I don't think he is playing though, I think he is mad at the leash. What should I do?? |
just work with him if you have another dog walk them together if not i say let him go his way until he gets use to he leach then start training gatsby would not walk until about 12 weeks but to get him use to the leach i put him on it around the house (watching carefully for snags and getting stuck)and by the time to walk he was okay with the leach whear do live in ohio i live in canton and if your close to thear we can meet up and gatsby can show your baby how to walk his older brother showed him i did very little work |

This is my little girl's favorite game. I take her out and she tugs the leash and growls. I pull it straight up and tell her to go potty and she will walk around a little, go potty, and tug and growl again. She sounds ferocious, but she is just playing. And when we come back in the house she grabs it again and I unhook her and put the loop around the post of my bakers rack and she plays tug of war by herself for a few minutes. It is adorable. She taught her puppy to play too, but my other little ones don't want anything to do with it. |
Nothing to worry about. He's a baby and he's playing with you. Now if he was like snapping at you when you tried to put the leash on him or something, that would be different. Do you have him on a harness or a collar? I rec getting him a harness and attaching a VERY lightweight leash to him. Get like a 4 foot as thin as you can find leash and let him drag it around the house. Make sure you are supervising him. No pressure just let him get used to the feel of it. Give him treats while on it. Once he gets used to dragging it around, then pick the leash up and just walk a couple of steps inside. If he resists, do NOT pull him. Walk the couple of steps, get down in front of him and call him. Let HIM do the walking. If you start pulling him around, he won't like it at all. Make sure you give lots of treats and praise when on the leash. Do not rush it. Also he's ONLY 9 weeks. You shouldn't be walking him around outside on the leash anyway. You don't really want him outside for an extended period of time until he has all of his puppy shots. He could pick up all kinds of diseases and then you'd have some hefty vet bills. If you are potty training on the leash outside, carry him to his spot, set him down, tell him to do his business or whatever command, let him sniff around and do it. If he doesn't, pick him up again take him back inside, then wait a few minutes or so and repeat. Do training with him inside. |
i live in canton so it might be to far but dont worry you will get plenty of advice hear and have all your questions answerd |
:aimeeyork How big is your pup? Are you using a harness or a collar with the leash? Some Yorkies are very sensitive to something on their necks. As far as practice, put the leash on and let puppy drag it around a little ONLY IF YOU CAN SUPERVISE though. They just aren't used to it yet. It takes a while. Good luck!:Pawprint: |
I'm presuming your baby has had all his shots? Nine weeks is pretty young so don't get disheartened. I got Tia at 13 weeks and when she was 14 weeks I put a collar on her (I hadn't discovered YT then and didn't know any better) and a flexi lead in the garden , just to get her used to it. Of course she hated it , although it didn't help when I retracted the lead and she was whipped in real quick because she weighed barely 2lbs:eek: At first she mouthed the lead and after her shots she stood at the door and wouldn't come out lol Its a big world out there and it must look truly scary for a little pup. Get him used to meeting different kind of people and dogs as soon as poss. Anyway if you get him a little harness and keep practicing with him he will love it eventually.I don't know any dog that doesn't like walks , so keep with it.:animal36 |
Thanks everyone! I do have him on a harness. He seemed better today. Maybe 'cause I stopped worrying about him, and realized that he is still a baby! Thanks for all the responses! :) |
Rosie is 7months old and still does it but she peferes to grab Alfies lead. He's trying to be good and walk nicely and she's trying to drag him into trouble. She's grabbed her own & growled in annoyance because I wouldn't let her off a few days ago. |
Lol what are those ....my babies have never had one they would probably go mad if i tried to put one on them lol they only like to be carried ...little spoiled brats spoiled but sweet lol |
