The joy of Bully Sticks!!
 
Today I went to the local pet boutique and got Teddy his first Bully Stick! I have heard so many good things from all of yall here on YT that I just had to try them out!! Just wanted to let yall know that yall are right!! They are great!! Teddy hasn't stopped chewing his yet! But I have a quick question... I was reading some past threads about putting them in the fridge to keep the bacteria off of them...is this like when they are done chewing then for the night or what?? I just wanted a little more details on this! Thanks so much!!

Very good!! What size did you get..?

I always will take away Peanuts stick when it gets to about 3" just so its not too short where it can get stuck or choke..something like that!

Yes I put mine in the fridge, I just bought 6 so 5 of them are in the fridge just in a zip lock baggy...

I will leave it down as long as we are home and he might want to chew..but at night I will put it in the fridge :D

I got Teddy the 6" bully stick...and he is STILL chewing on it haha. Thanks for the advice! I want the best for Teddy and that means no bacteria!! The only thing that grosses me out a little about the bully stick is how it gets all slimy after he chews it haha.

Ahh I bet he was sooo excited to get that stick!! The first time I gave one to Peanut he chewed on it for hours as well!!! Yeah I think the whole thing is pretty gross lol but they love it!! As long as he doesnt ask ME to chew on it..:D

We don't keep ours in the fridge, I only use the Merrick brand and they have less water content than many other brands. Bacteria need moisture to live, and because the Merrick brand dries out so fast after being chewed, bacteria die off too. By the way, bacteria don't die in refrigerator or freezer, colder temperature retard the growth, and so it doesn't multiply as rapidly, but even freezing doesn't kill bacteria. Certain brands have expiration dates, and this means that they were preserved artificially with chemicals, and bacteria may be more of a problem with them, but proper drying is a very safe natural preservative, the only bacteria that will be on the stick are the bacteria already in his mouth. I agree with lovespandp, throw away when it gets too small, we throw ours away at about 2-inches.

Yeah the I bought the Merrick brand bully stick! Thanks for all the info! and I will def be throwing it out when it gets too small....at this rate that could be tomorrow cause he's chewing it so much ;)

No it doesn't hurt, but it probably doesn't help that much, it depends on how long it takes to dry out in your refrigerator verses how long it takes to dry out at room temperature. Some refrigerators really suck the moisture out of food if not wrapped so this could dry it out faster. In AZ they really dry fast in our dry air. Just remember when moisture is gone bacteria are dead. You really don't have to worry so much about bacteria with dogs, they can handle many types of bacteria that would kill us.

Ok thanks Nancy!! I can always count on you!! His dries out pretty fast..we are in so cali so its pretty warm here...not as warm as az!!

Tessie got her first bully stick when she graduated from puppy classes at Petsmart. How long should I allow her to chew on it and does anyones dog get an upset stomach from chewing on the bully stick. My male dog also loves them but hates for me to take it away. Tessie is 8 months and Hobbes is 6 months. Also where can I find Merrick bully sticks? Petsmart has discontinued the ones I buy. Thanks, Susan

Joey has access to his pretty much all the time, he's not a gulper so I don't have to watch him closely like you would with some dogs. Some sticks are much softer and more of a food, while the Merrick stick is more bone-like and they have to chew it quite a while to get off a tiny piece. I buy the Merrick brand on e-bay.

any tips for the lovely smell they produce? :rolleyes: We get the Merrick bully sticks too, but they are generally quite stinky!! The last batch we got weren't though:) Britster said she got a different brand and had no issues with the smell.

Thanks Nancy, I will check this out. I only give Tessie and Hobbes their bully stick when I can watch them. Tessie can destroy hers in no time, Hobbes is nicer. I will check on line. Susan

Merrick are supposedly a medium smelling stick, going by what most people say. We buy a case at a time and there is lots of variation between the sticks, I'm not sure why, but it seems like the thicker ones have more of a smell. I don't think I notice the smell as much as I once did, but it's really dry here in AZ. I've heard of some brands with no smell, and other brands such as Red Barn that stink up a whole room. Joey loves them and that's all I care about any more. :D
