how many of u here spayed ur 3lbs baby? hey, im about to spay my little angel who is 3lbs ( 1 n half year old ) im super nervous for her being so small n wish to get more confident here! how many of u had successfully spayed ur tiny n how many of u lose them from anesthesia? one more thing is, are they in super high risk to get breast cancer n pyometra if they leave unspayed n unbred? if i hav a choice i wouldnt spay her coz tats scary :( |
I think Tia was around the 3lb mark when she was spayed. She weighed just coming up to 2lb at 14 wks and around 3lb at 24 wks when she was spayed.. She did well. She is now 5 lb at 14 months.:D |
My one girl was only 2.8lbs when I spayed her, and the other was about 3.2. They both had pre-anesthetic bloodwork and an IV catheter w/fluids while under the anesthesia. Ask your vet-some like to wait until a certain age/weight. I have seen other yorkies that were under 3 lbs get spayed and they all did well. Good luck. I personally wouldn't want to deal with the heat cycles and the chance that a male would accidentally tie with her--or even false pregnancy/pyometra. |

I have a 3 lb. adult that was spayed at that weight. I totally trust my vet with putting her under. She has been doing it for 11 yrs. now. |
I think you are right to be concerned but if you have your yorkie in the right hands and all the important blood work is done prior it should be safe but every surgery can have complications. I would want a vet who is used to working with small animals. Anesthesia of Small Breed Dogs |
That isn't the link I thought it was, i'll have to look further tonight. |
 |
I think everyone has given you excellent advise..and the key is the vet you use and if he/she is attuned to small dogs. One of my little girls was just a tad under 3#'s but my vet was fabulous and allowed me in the room during her surgery. I was there, the vet was there and her assistant was there monitoring her vitals so they could bring her out fast if need be. Bella passed with flying colors. |
4doggiemama has had no problems in 11 yrs so you could pm her and i'm sure she would have a wealth of info. This website a friend of mine sent me when i was thinking of getting a pup a while back. The additional testing is if a problem arises from blood work or other parts of the examination. I hear some get the EKG Preparing Your Dog for General Anesthesia and Surgery | Common Medical Diagnostic Tests for Dogs | FetchDog There should be more people with tines here that could give more input. 4doggiemama for sure. |

You also might want to read up on Laser spay. It was not available in my area when I had my females done but I would go that route if it was available. It is also availble for males. I had Maddie spayed she was 2.5lbs. I too think that is is very important to have a vet that has done smaller ones and that you feel confident in. Take all the extra precautions, I have heard wonderful things about the laser spay, no personal exp with it, but it would be worth checking into. Maddie did wonderfully for her spay, and extractions. She had no problems at all. |
I had Onni spayed when she was about 9 months old, she was 3.5 pounds. She did great! We have a wonderful vet that is used to working with very small dogs. |
maggie was in a pain that nite and then we finally got the okay from the vet to give her pain meds and she quieted right down. But overall she did really well. I think she was just around 3 lbs. Good luck, you've gotten lots of good advice already. |
